I'm mostly interested in the results of non-Americans. Americans, feel free to take it too.

Post your results and say where you're from.

I'm curious what type of English you foreigners learned, and I'm curious how other Anglo dialects compare to American accents. I expect British to line up with New Englanders.

I've seen a couple foreigners take this and their English lines up with New York and California, places where movies & TV are filmed.

Pic-related is my map. I was born in Pittsburgh but moved to Kentucky at a young age.

Too lazy to take the quiz but I'm from southwest Arkansas and I guess a pretty standard southern accent. Not as twangy as Tennessee and not as strange as New Orleans/cajun.

It depends on who I am around for a longer time. I pick up bits and pieces and certain expressions. I've mostly been influenced by British and Irish accents since I used to work in an Irish pub for several years. When I studied in the US for a year, I dropped the British and picked up just standard Midwest pronunciation.

Now that I am back in Germany, my go-to accent is still British and Irish, even though some words I would still pronounce the American way.

Even in the US, I do this weird thing where I pick up the speech patterns of the person I'm talking to. I'm like a social chameleon and it gets bad sometimes when I'm talking with "working class" folks because I start using bad grammar, but I can't help it. My cousin's friends are all in plumbing, HVAC, and similar trades, and I talk in double negatives and say ain't and shit around them.

Also those terms are hilarious. I've only ever heard Dust Devil.

Wow buddy, take it slow. Why would you think that? English dialects of britain have more in common with Australian than any American dialect. Do you know how normal people in England even speak? I mean not the Oxford English blokes? They have most likely more dialects than the whole of US. Check the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxm6fQLaiDI

Ok but this is a quiz about American dialects. Yeah they are more similar to Australian accents than any American accent, but when compared to American accents, I expect them to be more similar to New England than elsewhere in the US.

>I pick up the speech patterns of the person I'm talking to
If this happens naturally to you and it doesn't sound fake, then it's a good thing. Even in German, I switch between High German and Bavarian, depending on who I am talking to. Elderly people, working class, people in bars, I usually adress in Bavarian accent, anywhere else I mostly go High German.

I remember when my friends' car broke in rural Kentucky and they wanted me to speak to the people in the carshop because they'd most likely understand me than any other of them.

A friend of mine from Australia actually picked up Bavarian German better than High German. It's fucking hilarious when he busts out those old timey expressions randomly.

lmao. Kentucky has a weird accent. It's not as twangy as West Virginia or Appalachian accents, but it doesn't have the nice drawl of deep southern accents. It's still pretty twangy though. I'm surprised you were able to understand them. Also do you remember which part of Kentucky you were in?

Yes, I do live in NC. However, because of difficult circumstances in my life, I never exactly had a permanent home. Was born in Colorado and lived there until I was 5, then moved between Arizona, Alaska, and NC, so I don't really have an area to call home.

Also my mother is from California, she grew up in Glendale/Los Angeles/San Diego, so that's probably why my accent is more like California despite never having lived there.

Yeah, it's not my favorite accent either. I prefer the deeper south, actually. I'd love to be able to switch to a southern accent but I would need a lot of practice to get the right kinda sound to it. And as I said, you need to be there with people who have that accent to get it into your ear.

Yeah that's what you guys colonized the most. Most of the rest of the country was settled by Germans. American in the context of this map means English and Scots Irish who have been here since the 1600s.
