por la misma razon que los estados del norte estan mas urbanizados... no hay indigenas.
Los Europeos llegaron principalmente a los puertos de Veracruz, Tampico y Baja, y por obvias razones prefirieron estar mas cerca de la frontera con E.U.
Mientras que al sur estan las mas grandes comunidades indigenas, y hay muchisimo menos mancha urbana.

I'm not an ignorant norteño so I know a bit more about this.
First of all, the spaniard colonial population wasn't in the north. They were in the center, with a few powerful landlords moving up to the north with their haciendas and basically slave indian labour. However, during the Porfiriato the promotion of legal migration of europeans to Mexico was midly successful, but failed in comparision to Argentina's same initiative. The incoming population was promised huge plot of lands and all of what was necessary to work it. Guess where there was actually land to give for free? Not Jalisco, el Bajio, Michoacan, Mexico City, or Veracruz, etc. These were all sporting populations up to 1 mill people. The north, needless to say, was a desolated wasteland, with Nuevo Leon having the hugest population at 350k.
So now you know where the whites came from, they were given FREE land to move there. They took the offer. Now, why is the north "more developed"? Protip, it isn't because the lack of indios (lmao) It is because the production model we had favored the industralization on our country through the protection of national enterprises, which were mainly "maquiladoras". These maquiladoras produced mostly for Mexico own needs between 1950-1982 and were placed in the north because 1) land was cheap and 2) It was close to an increasingly hungry USA. With the change to a neoliberal model, these were quickly sold or disregarded to private capital, these capital as you can guess is american. Thus, american corporations and their investment are mainly the cause the north is "developed"
