is trut tho.
started iluminism, photography, cinema, created the first cars, metric system. and without quoting every scientific advance, i just think that, for the good or bad, french revolution influenced much more peoples beliefs than english revolution.
plus, the industrial revolution was something that was about to happen over western europe, uk only had more capital

Yes not in a revolution though. It was a process that started in 1215 with Magna Carta and continues to this day, and never will be completed because society (and thus government) changes over time.

I dislike this idea from the French and Americans that you freeze a moment in time, write down what your country stands for in a constitutional document, and then refer to it forever making it almost impossible to amend

Plus if you're going to talk about who influenced the world more, there are more Parliamentary Democracies in the British style worldwide than there are American or French political systems.

Engrand is the most important european country since the XVIIth century (maybe even in the world but I can't relate to old ass cunts like India, China or Iran)

It created the enlightenment, it created liberalism, it created freemasonry, it created industrial economy, the French were jealous of them (Montesqiue or w/e), Germans, everybody. Hell, it helped to create the USA, although not entirely

But in terms of civil rights Poles don't need to envy the UK since Poland was centuries ahead of everybody
>>
>pretty much invented the modern world

Nope sorry, France did, allowing USA to exist.

the notions of citizenship and everyone being equal under law is something that is supposedly followed in every civilized country. and was an idea spread by french revolution.
>>
>>57091077
Nonsense.

1. Citizenship
The notion of citizenship started in the ancient Greek city-states if not early. It was DEFINITELY around during the Roman Empire because an important historical event of Roman times was when they made everyone in the Empire a Roman citizen

2.Equality under the law
I don't see any evidence this was spread by the French Revolution, as the idea had existed before then (Magna Carta in 1215 England established the right to due legal process for all freemen), and then the French certainly didn't practice what they preached.

Universal equality under the law and human rights for everyone, except those black people in the French colony of Haiti who should be genocided for wanting freedom.

The legacy of the French Revolution is hypocritical bullshit like that, brief dictatorship across Europe and centimetres.

any english native speakers here?

What does "fragmatic" mean?

Urban dictionary says it means "totally awesome", but i doubt that’s it. It’s somehow related to pragmatic. There’s also a fragmatic function..

>>

anyway, if 2 native speakers say it’s not a word, that’s good enough for me. Thanks
>>
>>57092658
The author of that text just invented that word, he says so in the text.

"Fragment" is a real word. It means to break up into pieces or disintegrate.
>>
>>57092050
i think you mean "pragmatic" :
dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations.
"a pragmatic approach to politics"
>>
>>57092957

this was actually a theory during the late 1800s to early 1900s, it was thought that the british were the lost tribe of israel and that the brits were actually god's chosen people

it seemed at the time to be the only way to explain how brits were so much better than everyone else, it's called british israelism

It was most likely influenced by the puritans

The sad thing is that puritans destroyed England and catholicism and I don't understand why people in the UK hold any sentiment for Cromwell, who by destroying catholicism paved the way for liberalism, which is killing Britain now
>>
>>57093889

The catholic kings and queens after the majority of the people converted to protestantism were shitty.
>>
>>57093889
England became great after Cromwell, he didn't destroy it. In Cromwell's time England was fairly weak, not near the top tier of global powers. England and later the UK became a formidable economic and military power after 1688, the so-called "Glorious Revolution", which happened after the Republic and Restoration.
>>
>>57089463
is there any sort of way to measure this?is it GDP per capita?

For example, like you say, even though the UK is the 6th largest economy in the world, it doesn't feel that way. I see the price of US foods and stuff and my jaw drops. On minimum wage with little expenses i'd struggle to even have anything left after bills.

What I mean is: a factor of average income (or minimum wage) over cost of living to actually give an idea of how easy it is to get by in such a country and have an expendable income.

Gotta remember we get a whole lot more public services than they do in the US, and so get taxed more too.

We're at 4.4.

Sounds about right. In a global context, Brits are relatively wealthy, but when compared to their former colonies like AUS, US, and CAN, they are nowhere even close. The standard of living in the UK is far below places like that.
>>
>>57095323
Protestantism was a mistake that never should've happened
>>
>>57096317
Eh, we're still pretty high up. We're actually above New Zealand on the "Household net adjusted disposable income" rankings, fairly top tier, just below Canada.

I tweaked with the settings a bit and the top countries to come out for me personally based on what I value most (income, low housing cost, life satisfaction and work/life balance) US didn't actually come out on top. Top for me were Norway and Denmark.

To say the UK is "not even close" to the ex colonies and "far below places like that" is actually ridiculous. I'm sorry I furthered your biases about the UK being a shithole because it really isn't.

The main problem we have is housing and I think that is the root of my dissatisfaction at the moment.
