shotgun spread is a meme, it takes a pretty long distance to spread so unless you have a sawed-off (which I'm pretty sure isn't legal in NY, my state, due to being impractical to the use of a militia and dangerous) I doubt it would spread enough to increase chance of hit.
Ideally if you aren't an old man with arthritis you should be able to very easily mag dump onto a home invader at a pretty close distance.
