>UK hold onto the island for most of it's known existence as a populated place
>Argentina has no rational claim to the island besides "it's near us" and uses the island as means of distracting the populace from the real problems since their government is garbage
>Argentina invades the island unprovokingly, UK humiliates them and reconquers it immediately
>Referendum demanded by foreigners
>Referendum has 99% of the population vote to remain with the UK
>UN wants to be as partial as possible to the poorer country in every single situation
>hurr durr obviously this incapable and corrupt gauchofest controls the waters around an island that was never actually theirs.
This is the most autistic dispute in history.
I've seen a stark lack of argentine posters today. I think they're scheming something.
>>57069130
Its a UN Commission, not the UN itself. It can say a lot of things, but this doesn't mean they will be enacted upon by the UN at large or through vote.

The Chinese were ready to go to war over Hong Kong man, there was no scenario where you would have held onto Hong Kong past the treaty
>>57073595
You're alright, Poland.
>>57073846
I know, I don't pretend that there was much hope onto holding Hong Kong.
Boy it would be a bloodbath, though, I can see it playing out in two ways, either Alamo/Stalingrad or ending without a shot when the governor of Hong Kong tells the armed forces to lay down their arms to prevent a bloodbath of civilians.
>>57073595
God bless you poland
>>57074275
The Chinese would have overwhelmed whatever forces you had stationed there quite rapidly, the sheer numbers they'd flood in would negate any type of advantage you boys had.
I doubt it would even be that bloody other than the forcing the British garrisons to surrender (because who wouldn't when 500,000 Chinks are now storming your city).
From there it would be "okay we own the island, try and take it back from us".
>>57074389
The island is easily within range of artillery though, so it would be hell on earth for anyone stationed there
>>57074462
The Chinese government would have wanted to mitigate damage as much as possible, I doubt unleashing salvos into Hong Kong's urban core would play into that economic preservation.
>>57069130
Wouldn't there be an exclusive economic zone are around the islands too? Like, creating and Argentinian ring around them?
>>57074389
I don't doubt it.
Though this had made me very curious on how you would try and hold Hong Kong.
Blow the bridges, entrench into areas that would create extreme collateral damage ete.
Given China's ROE of not wanting to break shit, my guess would be just to starve the island with a naval blockade.
>>57075069
Last man with a nuclear dead man switch
>>57075069
>my guess would be just to starve the island with a naval blockade.
Yup, if the British REALLY wanted too they could make land passages into Hong Kong (i.e the bridges and mountain passes) complete hell which would force the Chinks to go by Sea and Air in HK.
From there it would be a race (albeit a losing one) between the British Navy trying to reach HK and the Chinese government trying to crack HK proper before reinforcements arrive.
It makes things even more interesting because the US has a HUGE naval presence only a short stones throw away in Okinawa/Japan, I doubt the 7th fleet would wake up from its slumber though even if things got hot between UK/China.
>>57071071
W-What kind of bullying schemes are you up to?????
The Falkland Isles are not a part of the UK, they have their own government and infrastructure, but instead they are what's known as a "British Overseas Territory," wherein the UK is responsible for representing their foreign affairs and is in charge of their defence. This is because the population of the Isles has long been of British descent, and given the history of the Isles, has British culture and history. Not only this, but the Isles have largely been British territory for over 150 years. Further, the some 3,000 residents of the Isles have voted 99.8% in favour of remaining a British Overseas Territory, in 2013. The rights of the Falkland Islanders to their self-determination shall not be infringed, and the land-grabbing aspirations of the bastard Argentine will not stand.

Yes. Explain how modern Argentina suddenly having an interest in the Falklands islands alligns with recent exploratory oil campaigns?
You people have never had an interest in these islands. They were unnocupied when we first landed there in 1765.
In 1832 you suddenly arrive there and demand we give them over to you, ignoring the British claim that had stood for 67 years. In 1833 we evicted you with no loss of life.
Now, over 100 years later, you are singing the same old tune... bugger off, they're not yours, we know why you want them you poverty-stricken little sneaks. The residents of the Islands wish to remain a British Overseas Territory, have their own rule, and wish to remain that way. In 1982 you invaded them, with no prior warning, and simply expected us to cede them to you. Well you can simply bugger off you cheeky little shits.
This doesn't have anything to do with the UK though. We just presented documentation on 2009 that under the law of sea allows us to claim more waters.
The UN even said that this legislation doesn't affect areas in dispute, like Malvinas or Antartica.

The conscripts were kinda irrelevant because once the Royal Marines and Paras got a beachhead on the Falklands, Argentina couldn't have stopped them. Conscripts or not.
Victory for Argentina was possible - in fact it was likely - however it had to happen in the air or in the sea. The quality of that era's Royal Navy ships was NOT good, and Argentina's air force had better fighters than the RAF/Royal Navy

>How did they tide of the war turned?
That's what makes it an interesting war. Because the ARA were not shit, they were skilled and respected by the British side, but they were let down by logistics. They didn't have air-to-air refuelling so had to operate at the limits of their range once they lost the Falklands airbases. The British Harriers had good missiles and skilled pilots who figured out how to engage the French aircraft in a way that minimised their effectiveness.
But for the British the difficult part was fielding this taskforce so far away in a hostile area for an extended period of time. It was almost impossible. It would have been completely impossible without the other territories like Ascension Island to form part of the logistics chain. The airbase on Ascension became the busiest airport in the world during the war.
I think the Argentinian side was taken aback by the speed and aggression of the British forces, but that was the only way to win because a couple of weeks longer and the small British aircraft carriers would have been out of fuel and would've had to withdraw
>>57079356
Because the english expel the argentines living there and put his own people
>>57079471
I see, not so long ago i watched a documentary about a operation that involved almost the whole Air Task Force of the british side, with a few Vulcans and other planes for refueling.
One of those Vulcans had to land in Rio.
>>57079684
>with a few Vulcans and other planes for refueling.
You seen their refueling plan? Fucking madness but it worked.
>>57079684
Yeah that operation is famous because of pic related. The Vulcan is a short-range tactical nuclear bomber designed for a single purpose: to fly really fast from England to Russia and nuke Moscow in an aerial first strike.
The British military top brass knew the psychological effects of seeing (and hearing - the Vulcan's scream is quite a unique sound) these coming towards you. They could carry hardly any conventional weapons and had a short range.
So this elaborate refuelling plan was devised in order to get the Vulcans to the Falklands and if possible bomb Argentine positions. If you look at this diagram, you can see why one had to land in Rio. A lot could go wrong.
>>57079949
Yeah, take a while to fully understand, but impressive as fuck, WWII-tier operation.
>>57079971
Yeah, they took the Side-Winder missile that was with the plane. Which is was crucial for us to start building missiles.
