Isn't 4chan blocked in Mainland China?
No, likely because so few Chinese come to 4chan, 4chan itself isn't blocked. However, because Google services are throttled and the captcha is owned by Google, in order to post, Chinese posters must use a 4chan pass to bypass the captcha, as it never loads.

Why are /east asian/ languages so hard for a whitu piggu like me to learn? I want to try picking up Mandarin as a hobby/casual study but it looks so difficult.

I have already have been studying one foreign language but it is a meme-tier one and very similar to English. I have discovered that Language learning does not come easy to me, that is for sure.

If learning a second language (and one similar to English) doesn't exactly come easy to someone, how can they ever hope to take on something like Mandarin?
>>
>>57060887
Most european languages are alphabet-based, and have latin roots, making them easier to learn for someone who speaks another European language. Meanwhile East Asian languages are character-based and are completely different from English, except for grammar (Chinese and English grammar are remarkably similiar, at least in my opinion).

I don't think learning languages is easy for anyone except geniuses. Learning a new language is tough, but it will be well worth it if you enjoy that language's culture. I try to make it enjoyable for myself to learn a language by using media like books and movies. It will take more time than taking lessons, but it is much more fun.

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions about Chinese, I will be happy to help.
>>
>>57060887
If you're interested in Chinese culture and language, you should start studying it. Like >>57061142 said, when you're actually interested in the corresponding culture, it makes learning the language worth it.

Why is your name in traditional characters when you type with simplified?
>>
>>57064209
I used to have my name written in simplified, but I decided to change it to traditional because it looks nicer. As most of my Chinese friends are from the Mainland and because most of the books I use to study from are written in simplified, I tend to write in simplified, though oftentimes when I'm chatting with someone from Taiwan, HK, or Macao, I type in traditional.

because you are having a distorted image on language learning.

GTFO of your european language comfort zone and go take anything sufficiently different (Xhosa, Zulu, Arabic, turkic, farsi, hindi, tamil, malayalam, melayu, tagalog, visayan, mongol, burmese, thai, viet, cham, Nahuatl, mayan, aramaic, cherokee, mohawk...)
Because learning another language just three four hundreds years ago meant learning a culture/language zero up.

Mandarin is not as hard as you think; the whole hubbub about it being one of the most difficult languages to learn is a meme. I'm pretty slow at learning languages, but I've gotten up to an intermediate level of Mandarin and I'm still improving.

Think about this:

-Words in Chinese are very short (most words you'll use have two syllables) and syllables are very simple (no consonant clusters; very limited syllable finals), making vocabulary a breeze to memorize.

-The grammar of Chinese is also straightforward. Chinese is an analytic language, so understanding the grammar depends on the word order and on separate words that tell you what's going on. Think about English: (1) we can express the future tense fairly easily, either through the use of 'will' or 'going to', without having to modify the verb itself. (2) We also determine what the subject and object are by their position in the sentence, as opposed to the way it's done in some other languages (Latin and Russian determine these by inflections on the subjects and objects).
Chinese is even easier in this respect: verbs have NO inflection. There are other words that you can add on to the sentence to say that an action is completed, or imply that it'll happen in the future, but Chinese has nothing like EAT/EATS/ATE (or Spanish COMO/COME/COMI/etc.).

-Chinese characters may seem daunting now, but they're extremely systematic, and once you start exposing yourself to them daily, you'll be able to pick out the patterns faster. Learning radicals and simpler characters also help you more easily learn and read more complicated characters.

We are for ancient Chinese history, and China is not a country that has only Chinese culture.
There are Mongol, Tungus, and so on in Chinese region.
Today's China is made by them.

While there are many other cultures, we have inherited ancient Chinese culture.
