It's weird, but for all our linguistic proximity, the Slovenes have very little in common with the Serbs. The way we celebrate holidays, traditional cuisine, traditional music, traditional dress, mentality...all of it is very dissimilar, even after decades of living together. The western quarter of the country, the Littoral, is influenced by Italy in everything. They are different to us Carniolan Slovenes, who are influenced by German culture, in everything from surnames to music to attitude towards life. They also share much of their culture with Istrian Croats and the Friulians of Italy. Then there are the Styrian Slovenes who are also continental in culture, but have strong similarities to the Croats of Zagorje - their dialects are closer to Serbo-Croatian and less distinctly Slovenian than those of the Carniolans, and they are also known to be more outgoing. The last group is the Prekmurians, who are Hungarian in culture and very hard to understand in dialect, and whose closest relatives are the Croats of Međimurje. But since the capital is in Carniola, we idiosyncratic Central Slovenes have the strongest cultural representation :3

A region in NW Slovenia called Bohinj with the synonymous lake in the background. It's quite close to lake Bled, pictures of which I'm sure you've seen on this board before.
My granddaddy was murdered by partisans in Bohinj at the outbreak of WWII in Yugoslavia under unclear circumstances. The region is completely surrounded by mountains except for one narrow valley which was then only traversable by train, and he was master of the only train station therein.
