When the US expanded westward in the 118th - 19th century, it logically divided new land into various squares with the land ordinance act of 1785.. Big square states, subdivided into smaller square counties, which are then divided into square farm plots to be given out to settlers. Each bit of land was rated by surveyers
The US needed a lot of peasants to fill in these new squares, and overpopulated German farmers were with advanced skills were a huge boon to lure to fill in it.
The farmers haven't really gone anywhere in the past few generations, a lot of them got massive swaths of flat empty land all to themselves so it looks impressive on maps. Today you can see the effects of it in satellite photos showing the farm-squares

The language was thoroughly suppressed due to the world wars, and forced assimilation policy actually. For a while until the wars, their newspapers were all still in German or Czech which spooked people out east. The government didn't want the equivalent of a German-speaking Quebec substate in the west so the language was subverted or suppressed by the govt.

If you look at the census in the 80's before the 'American' option was added the largest group identified as British, take that as you will.
Biased map, British is separated into the British sub-ethnicities like Scottish, English, Welsh and Ulster-Scots (Scotch-Irish). Not to mention those who identify as "American" are mainly of assorted British Ancestry. Furthermore, areas that genuinely are of majority German origin are some of the least populated parts of the US.
