I am going to be interning in a science laboratory (english-language lab) in Japan for the summer.

Actually I did try answer your question by encouraging you to think for yourself. Since you are relcutant to do so, I will tell you: A first-generation migrant can never be fully integrated in to any culture. They might be able to exist happily in the same society, but they will never belong to the host culture in any authentic sense. As for later generations, it depends on mixing, upbringing, etc..
This is true regardless of the nation in question. So you have your answer for Japan, as well.
