Well if you want to go to the med skip Malaga,Marbella and levante at all costs. Girona is a pretty interesting place. You have old volcanoes,Gerona that is quite a beautiful city and lots of qt villages. There are also gorgeous small beaches and fewer tourists than in Barcelona. But it is quite hot. You also can spend some days in mountain places and hike,as you are pretty close to the Pyrenees,pic is a view from the pyrenees (sorry for the quality).

In summer the central regions are like an oven. Lots of things to see there,but summer is hell,even for locals. The south is great for doing tourism,but temperatures reaches 40 degrees some times,and some places are too touristic. Barcelona and Madrid are expensive. The Basque country too. The rest shouldnt be expensive. Probably the cheapest western country behind Portugal,another interesting option. The north is comfier on summer. Fewer people an cooler weather. But Gerona is a great option,is just warmer. Check Asturias for example Oviedo and Covandonga are great places.
