Because of the peace treaties made after WW2, we had no option except to be "Finlandized" or be annexed by the Soviet Union. It was not a voluntary shift to becoming a Soviet vassal like you claimed it was.

After all, the Soviet Union offered the reunification of Germany fairly early, but under the condition of German neutrality. This was seen by German politics as bait, as Germany would have become finlandized in such a scenario, meaning, the neutrality wouldn't be a real one, as there would always have to be most far reaching considerations for the power bloc right next to us. This woud have dominated all foreign policy considerations and made neutrality a farce.

The old dualism of Warsaw Pact vs NATO has been replaced with NATO vs Russia. It's essentially the old dualism, albeit with a more powerful NATO and Russia being only a shadow of the former Soviet Union. This would make it easier to join NATO and also make a member benefit from the security NATO provides at far less cost than during the Cold War because of the shift in the power balance towards NATO.
