Divorces are much more likely than 100 years ago, you have roughly 50% chance of divorcing while child support and alimony completely favours women. Another thing is the decline in the number of marriages. The current economy raises somewhat artificially the opportunities and resources for women, and this compared with the natural instinct of women to aim for a partner of a higher social status results in all the women competing for the top 20% of men, thus all the hordes of single people, both men and women.

But my parents actively try to dissuade me from having children. They had me when they were in their early-to-mid twenties, but simply put, there's no money for anyone in my generation to start a family. Salaries and wages are calculated to set you up with exactly the amount of disposable income that keeps 3/4 of people happy. But you can't start a family on that little money. Starting a family in this economy is financial suicide, and you're almost certain to raise a kid who will grow up with less than you did. And I don't see why I should force a kid to live that life. I don't want to start a family if I can't take care of it.

Having kids is risky. First you have to find somebody who shares your ideals through a sea of people indulging in hook up culture. Then you have to figure out how to care for the child and bring money in during the formative years. All the while trying to maintain your marriage with all the outside temptations and pressures because now there isn't a social obligation to keep marriages together when times get rough.
That being said I still want to have children, preferably 2-3.

Part of the reason people could have larger families in the past was because the husband worked while the wife stayed home.
