That said you can use a few improvements, people will be impressed by you, but they will still pick up that you're not a native speaker. Literature is entirely created in this format, so you have to have a more than good command of the formal if you want to actually experience Arabic literature. (Try Salim Barakat, great writer.) Translation was considered the natural way of learning a language up to the late XIXth century - early XXth, when people starting to really develop the science of teaching stuff.
It is still a good way and translation classes are common when you learn a language in school. It won't make you fluent though, as you'll litteraly end up talking like a book. I'd say you can go for it, but use other ressources on the side.
