Sorry for my lack of Australian history, but Is Australia an Independent country or is it still mostly governed by the British? If it is independent, when did it gain independence?

They're still Britain's little bitch. If they weren't, they would get rid of their cuckstamp.
>>
Effectively independent. Still have token ties to the monarchy.

Are you b8ing or something?

The "Australia Act" of 1986 ended any British role in our government. Literally the only connection we have to the British now is that we have the same queen.
>>
Australian colonies were semi-self-governing for a significant period throughout the 19th century. Australia gained de jure independence in 1901 when the colonies federated in to a single nation. Even so, vestiges of British influence remained, albeit with ever-declining significance (specifically following each World War, though moreso the Second than the First), until the Australia Act of 1986 removed our last real legal ties with Britain. Now we share culture, heritage, legal foundations, monarchy, and membership in the Commonwealth, but nothing relating to the direct establishment or implementation of government policy. Britain is rightly considered a motherland, but a separate one.

We became an independent nation in 1901 following Federation. The British held some, but very little power amongst state governments until 1986. To this day, we're still a constitutional monarchy but the Queen has no power here, and is a symbolic head of state.

It's a sign of Anglo-Saxon brotherhood and shared identity, not that you would understand, Hans Juan Luigi O'Finnigan.

They gained independence the exact same way we did. Incrementally over time.

Canada gained self governance (It's own government, control over all internal affairs, own army, etc) in 1867. Australia did the same thing 1901. The problem was that despite being functionally independent, we weren't technically independent countries. We were still part of the British Empire and were kinda obligated to follow their lead internationally, to put this in an analogy: we didn't have our own UN seat, we just sat with the British delegation. There was tension around this (At least in Canada) because we didn't want to join in all Britain's dumb colonial wars.

After WWI, when Nationalist feelings were high because of our astounding success fighting in the war, we spearheaded a movement for Britain's dominions to gain total independence over their foreign affairs so they could be more like actual countries. This culminated to the Statute of Westminster in 1931. This gave Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.. total control their foreign affairs. We could now both be a country, and act like a country. We could do shit internationally under our own name, rather than Britain's name.

So that was all fine and dandy for a while, but there was an oversight we still had to deal with. Our constitutions. Which were still interwoven with the British Courts. Whenever we wanted to change a part of our Constitution, we would have to go to London, which was obviously pretty fucked up for an independent nation. So in 1982 (Australia in 1986), we drafted our own shit and cut the final string connecting us to the British government.

>inb4 but you are still under rule by their queen so you aren't independent lel XDDDD
We share a Queen. She holds separate titles in each country she is Queen in, she just happens to live in the UK. If the UK became a Republic tomorrow she would still be our Queen. The Monarchy is a separate entity from the British Government.

You have like 200 Austrian and Somali flags on yours. Bow to your Habsburg pirate overlords, fuccboi
>>

That's an interesting thought. It's unlikely but if we ever became a republic the royal family could feasibly just spend their time in Australia or Canada and slowly integrate into the culture there.
>>
>>56803487
>the Queen has no power here
Wrong.
Reserve powers.
The British government has no power here. The Queen is an integral part of our government and has very real power.
>>
>>56804193
We have a residence for her and everything. It would work just fine.

The plan was that if the Germans landed in Britain during WWII the Royal family would be moved here
>>
>>56804202
which she used once on request

honestly the monarchy doesn't give a shit about us
>>
Le cuckstamp XDD
>>
The whole cuckstamp thing can be explained simply: the majority of Australians are of Anglo-Celtic stock and really don't care about the flag, we aren't large or diverse enough to see change, for now
