Quite the opposite, the USA had several teaching reforms during the cold war specifically to rid themselves of superstitions and be up to par with the Soviet Union. That's why religion stopped playing an important part in American schools.
This eventually led to a lot of backlash by people denouncing these practices on the grounds that it was corrupting souls and chose to go their own way, teaching children directly from the bible. Those people are now fully grown and eligible to run for presidency.

there is a false dichotomy that many believe nowadays that if you are religious that you will therefore be uneducated or less advanced.
This is simply not true, if anything a (christian) religious society has an easier time maintaining a free and open society because they believe there is a god as supreme lawgiver. Since religious people believe that there is a static anchorpoint of what is right and wrong they are less likely to fall into the communist trap that wants people to believe that since there is no god, it does not matter what you do to achieve good goals. There is no static right or wrong, and anything (even the taking of lives) can be sacrificed to reach a greater good (the communist society).
