I'm horribly depressed, I'd say I don't know why but I do, it's hard to explain.
I haven't had a friend since I was 14, I'm 25. Don't know how to drive, family was too poor for a car. I take the bus 90 minutes each way to go to university because I can't afford to live closer.
I haven't talked to a person that wasn't my mother about non-school related things face to face in probably years.
I'm too scared to tell my psychiatrist my real thoughts because he might force me to be hospitalized. I've been on 4 or 5 different antidepressants now since I was 21.
The hard part is that being depressed is just taboo. You're not allowed to talk about it with anyone, even your doctor is difficult.
I wish I had a real medical condition instead

In a third world country, your family needs you to survive. Even teens are expected to work in a lot of developing countries. The bonds between husband and wife are made stronger by the need to cooperate and survive. A family is a group working together in the third world, and killing yourself would be selfish, you would be letting your family down. In first world countries, we see high rates of divorce. Most people are estranged and detached from each other. The lack of hardships caused people be isolated in their struggle. There is nothing for them to work for, and even worse, no one to feel close to. Even married couples often live separate lives with separate ideals and goals. People in first world countries lack a feeling of cohesiveness with their fellow man, an as a result feel there is no reason to live.
It's a good thing. The weak removed themselves.
People kill themselves in garbage countries as well.
However I'd imagine the big difference is how easy it is to become a loner who spends his time in a small room in front of a computer. That really lets bad thoughts build up.
