This is a misconception. The idea is to be well trained enough to be able to follow orders in an actual (incredibly stressful) situation immediately. So when someone, for example the leader of your squad, yells out orders in order to make the squad function as a part of a platoon and a company, they can actually do it. It's necessary in such a situation when information (in the form of orders) has to travel REALLY fucking quick from the company commander all the way to the individual infantrymen.
It does not mean that you lose your cognitive and rational capabilities when it comes to orders coming from someone who is above you in a hierarchy of an institution. And 99% of the conscripts constantly question their superiors' decisions with almost everything, from fucking guard duty schedules to who is ordered to pass the food to others.

I mean, this reminds me of my high school experience. I went to this catholic school and I pretty much had nothing in common with anyone. Eventually we became friends with a valley girl type - you know. Shallow, gossipy, always trendy, somewhat clever. We were friends, but only because we understood each other in ways the others did not.
She knew I was a fag, and I knew she was a gigantic whore, though we didn't say this out loud. We were outcasts, we understood each other, but didn't care, and that was literally the basis of our friendship. Acceptance, because we had no other options. Needless to say, after graduation we didn't talk anymore.
I guess what I'm trying to say is... friendships that you choose instead of being thrown together imo last more. Worth more. I'd rather be friends with someone who genuinely likes me, and not because we were stuck in the same miserable place.

I have some, sadly where I served was between two population centres and pretty much everyone I got close to was from the other centre than I. Still see them a few times a year or so, and the best thing about army buddies is that they're you'r army buddies. It doesn't matter if we got out five days or five weeks ago, we shared a lot of shit and formed quite strong relationships while we did it. FFS my dad still goes on a weekend binge with his army buddies every year and he served in 1979.
You're making a comparison between one shitty experience you had, which is completely different than going through conscription, with the experience millions of us have had and still the vast majority of us supports conscription. I refuse to believe it's just sadism or something, we all know how many man hours per year is "wasted" with conscription that could be used working or studying.
You should also consider the fact that this is largely a cultural thing, serving is like getting established as a man in our tribe. And calling it archaic is just silly as we have a rich history of serving in other peoples wars but I literally have relatives older than Finland

Perhaps, but in Hungary it is archaic. And if you look at the trends, most European nations - and other civilized places - like Canada, or the U.S have abolished conscription and instead prefer professional armed forces made up by volunteers.

Well, like I said we have no military despite our population density. Basically we abuse NATO, we're just freeloaders. It's quite a pleasant arrangement. The U.S is our bitch, they pay out of their pocket for everything, and we get free defense. Not that I think the Russians would attack us. Our PM is rather chummy with them. Absolutely disgusting.
But to be honest I'm surprised you guys haven't joined the NATO yet though. If you joined, Russia would never dare attack you. The enemy of your enemy is your friend afterall.

Conscription is the best prevention method for an invasion, like the US army could be defeated by some coalition but the american people could never be subdued , you can't invade a country with 200 million gun owner, those fuckers own flamethrowers and grenade launchers and shit, its especially good for small cunts loke Switerland who can't have a large army due to small population
Also i think everyone should be able to manage a gun, or learn to defend themselfves and other basic shit like how to start a fire or how to act in case of emergency
