To say we don't recognize teenagers as a thing is inaccurate. Hell, a shit-ton of our media revolves around teenagers and the iniquities of their lives. However, we still don't consider them adults yet, so we keep them to the same legal standards which applied to them as children (outside of things like driving, employment, etc.)

Yeah, but different varieties of protestant can differ wildly in their views, so it's best not to confuse them.
Also, the puritan way of thinking didn't spread much beyond New England (and it's dying out there as the region gets more and more liberal). Most of the moral backwardness in our media actually comes from the Baptists and evangelical protestants who are common in the South and the Great Plains, respectively.

Also, teens will usually get different treatment in criminal cases than, say, a 10 yer-old. Sometimes teens can be sent to federal prison.
I don't think it's entirely codified as to what punishments can be applied to teenagers, so that is a fair criticism. The only case I know of that set a legal precedent for that was a case in '07 where it was decided that teenagers can't be given the death penalty until they hit 18.
