As an American, this might sound bad, but when you're an adult, all adult relationships are voluntary at their core.
It's not uncommon for the grandparents of American children to be in a completely different state than their grandchildren. Their children will move, maybe for business, maybe after getting married, who knows. The children's children will do the same. Maybe the grandparents will move for retirement.
Distance makes it hard to be involved in any relationship, and this is especially true when it's someone who doesn't have any direct involvement in your life and who hasn't affected it in any noticeable way. Your parents raised you, and hopefully love you. If you love them back, you'll care. Grandparents are just kind of a phantasm in America that live across the country and send Christmas cards with a couple bucks every so often.
Combine this with how large America is (hehe) and there's little to no chance Jimmy Jr. is gonna fly cross-country for some burgers and beer with pop pop.

There are some who argue that this kind of family or "clan" mentality is why a lot of countries remain poor even today. My grandfather is the last grandparent I have. He's got a house next to the football stadium with his cats because he loves both. He lives about an hour away from him and I come and visit him pretty often. During football season I'm there almost every weekend to attend the games with him. Mind you, it's not the same football you're familiar with.

When I turned 18 my mom threatened to kick me out and although I was allowed to stay in the house she made me work for everything and pay for all my own shit, while at the same time complaining how easy I had it going to school for a biochemistry degree.This was all after I got accepted to my dream school and she talked me out of going by saying she would help me pay for school and that I should avoid student loans. Now I'm in debt at my shitty state school barely maintaining a decent GPA while working.
That and I barely know my father.
