Vietnam was a political loss. We won every military engagement there. The problem was that the war wasn't popular at home and LBJ was extraordinarily careful to avoid citizens, overly careful desu. For instance, in bombing Hanoi, he said we couldn't bomb certain areas because of civilian risk. VC figured that out quick and moved their shit into those areas.
Not sure you've seen Apocalypse Now, but the monologue at the end is great. US troops go into a village, give vaccines to people and then when they go back they find the VC have chopped the arms off of those who received vaccines (Taliban do similar things). How can you fight a group that has the will to do anything when you have to adhere to heavy human rights.
