The funny thing is, the southern accent is descended from a Ulster Scots/West Country hybridization, which is probably why that's your natural tendency.

>>
>>55079263
Just great, day-drinking and baking a cake while listening to Marschmusik.
>>
>>55079149

>is that how english people spoke 300 years ago?

No. Although it sounds very odd, you can tell it's Americans and not Brits speaking
.
>>
>>55079143
Yeah gringos seem to have a lot of trouble with it. It's a shame, because the use of nasal sounds almost everywhere (not only ã and õ, many times words have nasal sounds without ~) is what mainly makes portuguese sound different to spanish

Here, have a tongue twister to make your nose hurt:
Tinha tanta tia tantã.
Tinha tanta anta antiga.
Tinha tanta anta que era tia.
Tinha tanta tia que era anta.
>>
>>55079320

>day-drinking and baking a cake

Well shit, bro. Pretty much the same except I made aple strudel instead. Drinking based Krombacher as we speak.
>>
>>55079441
>aple strudel
With custard?
I prefer Bitburger to Krombacher tbf but my drink of choice is mead-beer.
>>
>>55079367
so why does the americans speak like that? ulster influence? and does anyone know how english people and americans spoke at that period?
>>
>>55079149
The normal American accent is closer to the older form of English than modern British, for instance, our r is non rhetoric (the stereotypical American r) , the rhetoric r is a recent development in British English. Fall/autumn,

Standard American English was descended from Northeastern English varieties, and those colonists came from different parts of Britain than the Southerners, and were more influenced by Dutch, Scandinavian, and German immigrants.
>>
>>55079560
If you look at poetry from the period, you can see how things were pronounced based on rhyming patterns.
>>
>>55079548

>With custard?

Nahh lad, Chantilly cream. I've never head mead, always wanted to try it but everytime I saw it in the uk it cost an absolute bomb. I really like the German alt beers from duesseldorf but you can't get those here.

>>55079560

How the English spoke 300 years ago? Well it would still be somewhat like how you see Shakespeare is written although obviously very different in each region.

I can't answer the rest of your questions, I'm afraid except to say that with the Americans one has to remember the influence of all the many european immigrants like the Germans, for example.
>>
>>55079548

You got some German I could have a crack at?

Es war einst ein König in Thule,
Gar treu bis an das Grab,
Dem sterbend seine Buhle
einen goldnen Becher gab.

Es ging ihm nichts darüber,
Er leert' ihn jeden Schmaus;
Die Augen gingen ihm über,
So oft er trank daraus.

Und als er kam zu sterben,
Zählt' er seine Städt' im Reich,
Gönnt' alles seinen Erben,
Den Becher nicht zugleich.

Er saß beim Königsmahle,
Die Ritter um ihn her,
Auf hohem Vätersaale
Dort auf dem Schloß am Meer.

Dort stand der alte Zecher,
Trank letzte Lebensglut
Und warf den heil'gen Becher
Hinunter in die Flut.

Er sah ihn stürzen, trinken
Und sinken tief ins Meer.
Die Augen täten ihm sinken,
Trank nie einen Tropfen mehr.

One of my favourite poems

Well I dunno, I think mostly they go to Dublin. I have a friend who's been there since December, for one. But generally, it's the cool hip thing to do, since we have no market restrictions in Ireland, jobs are plentiful and everyone speaks English so it's the logical choice for many people. Maybe you personally haven't noticed it, but we had even some reports and documentaries about people leaving for Ireland here. Also, I guess a few thousands or maybe ten thousand is a lot to us, since we don't have such a huge manpool like brits, poles or (sand)niggers so such an exodus seems relatively big to us.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions about grammar.

As for the rating, same as before. You have an obvious accent and that's about it.

LJ is a single letter, believe it or not. Pay attention to how I pronounce it

There's a few other things, but you won't really need them until later. Duolingo is good for vocabulary, but not for understanding why words change - we have initial mutations for words.

But, there's only 11 irregular verbs, so learning the tenses should be fairly easy.

I started to read Bosnian-croatian-serbian grammar textbook but it is too long for me since i have limited time, do you suggest anything shorter?

as method of learning, I tried to learn the language by context, with a direct translation and building up my own vocabluary (as in the software 'Lingua Latina per se illustrata', it teaches Latin as well) . Can you suggest a more practical method?

I grew up on Dragon Ball, Detektiv Conan, Pokemon and bunch of other cartoons... In german. Basically I just watched German satelite tv, mostly because Cartoon Network got blocked so I had to watch cartoons elsewhere. I was about 4 when I started watching CN and about 7 when I started watching German channels more actively because CN got blocked.

Good effort. Some words are well pronounced, but you have a very strong accent.

Gotta work on those i.

Also, soulèvent and battent are pronounced as soulève and batte, and not as soulèvant and battant; it's the present tense.

It's about ships. The poem uses vocabulary that refers to both land and sea to blend the two ''world'' together.
