The border between the Bronx and Westchester county is like two different worlds to a kid who never goes to the city. I have probably gone to visit the city 30< times in my entire life if you discount the 30 seconds I was outside my school campus every day, and the school was a Catholic private school.

Keep in mind though, minorities here, are not like minorities elsewhere. With the exception of one neighborhood, there's no us or them mentality, and there's a really strong sense of community and pride in these places. I'd only be concerned about schools, but there are ways around that.
I'd also like to add, if you're considering moving to the city proper, and you have a problem being around non-whites, then unless you're a stay at home parent, you're going to be miserable, because they're impossible to avoid, even in the financial district. If you just prefer living around white christians, then that's fine, but I'm just giving you a heads up in case it's more than just a preference.

Universities are more than just teaching students, of course you can look at how well alumni do after graduating but universities like UCL, Kings College, Imperial College London are up their leading the way in science and medicine etc.
