No. Back then society was far less complex than today. The only factors that made a society thrive was favorable climate and geographical location as well as a small number of talented individuals (~5-10%) - the rest of the population did mindless jobs that didn't require much intelligence.
In todays society though, the primary thing that determines the success of a society is its human capital. The economy as well as the the bureaucracy is so much more complex than back then that the talents, intelligence, work ethics and the ability to cooperate of the whole population matters. This is why today, where climate and location are not that important anymore, the Northern European countries with their superior human capital are without any exception far better run than the countries in the Mediterranean.

North Italy is better than most of Northern Europe. Southern Gerrmany is better than Northern Germany. The Baltic and East Slavic states lag behind much more southern countries and so on.
Of course location is still important though, selective pressures (i.e. your whole argument) depends on location/socio-historical circumstances.
Being irrelevant for the vast majority of human history needs to be countered somehow, I suppose.
