There's a new planet in the solar system 10 times the size of Earth and it takes 10000 years to go around the sun.
What do you think of this?
>>
If it doesn't have ayy lmaos and there's no potential for future permanent manned bases then it's boring and will just suck funding from cooler planets and moons.

Good thing it's too far away to really do that anyway

That's pretty spooky to think that theres a giant planet just sitting out there in the outer edge of the solar system.
What if there's ayyliums living there and they're monitoring everything we do.
Theyre watching us when we're shitposting on /int/.
Theyre watching us when we're fapping to gfur.
That's fucking terrifying.
>>
>>53944746
this isnt exactly news ,the existence of a big trans-neptunian planetoid\planet has been know for many years from it fucking with orbits of kuiper belt asteroids .finding it and calculating its exact orbit will probably be hard as fuck as it dosnt get much sunlight .

we should totally send a kuiper belt probe to rendezvous with it with like really sensitive spectral analysis stuff.
>>
>>53944746
Not at all confirmed. They put it at like 60-75% likely. Once they actually observe it, I'll care.

>>53945107
theres probably many more of those farther away , the only reason we know about this one is comets\asteroids its fucking with .

>>53945225
it is confirmed , the 60%-75%is the probability that its mass is within one sigma(+- ~65%) of 10 earth masses .

clapistan should totally use the biggest SLS + best ion thrusters they got to probe it once we get its orbit .
>>
>>53944746
Why can't I find this being reported anywhere?

I want to USA USA USA post but I need a source.
>>
>>53945407
It hasn't actually been found.

As other anon's have said they've just inferred that it must be there based on how it's influenced the orbits of other objects in the solar system. It's been known about for years but it's only recently been brought to the attention of clickbait articles for some reason.
>>
>>53945495
Then come back when you have something from BBC or CNN you fucking nerds.

I can't USA USA USA post with God damn Daily Mail and New York Post links.

>>

It's not on the front page of CNN, BBC, NBC, FOX, Reuters, Der Spiegel..

If it ain't front page on any of those it isn't worthy of USA posting.
>>
>>53945367
It would take like 75+ years to get there even at its closest approach.

basically they tracked senda and like 6 other minor planets and saw something big was fucking with them.

>>53945651
well that's the classical dilemma of when to launch something , if propulsion tech develops fast enough you can overtake it with other rockets . we could use an intermediate nuclear rocket stage and make the probe light enough that we can accelerate it and save a few decades doing a non hohmann transfer (not minimum delta v)

To the billions of other species we're the aliens.

No, we are part of an alien.
The whole cosmos as we know it is its body.
That's the problem with "aliens",
we don't recognize them even when they stand in front of us.

Yeah you wish it looked like that.

All dark and mysterious and storming.

I bet you also want to hold ancient alien secrets or maybe be part of to some cosmic horror phenomenon, gateway to another plane of existence that's completely outside the realm of human understanding.

You Americans are so predictable.

10 times the mass of earth invariably means gas giant.

thus, similar to jupiter and saturn, i don't give a fuck about the planet itself and am more interested in its moons, should it even exist.

besides, who the fuck knows what's in the kuiper belt or oort cloud. could be fucking anything.

our solar system is boring when it comes to other planets.
>>
>>53950390
Cause its so far away that in a telescope it just looks like a star so even if someone has seen it before they didn't know it was a planet.
>>
>>53950812
How far can a planet be until it stops rotating around the sun? That's the cut-off for what's considered part of the solar system or not, right?
>>
>>53944746
100 bucks saying they will name it Juno (wife of Jupiter and Goddess of women).
>>
>>53950390
>I'm thinking how the fuck did it take so long for us to notice a planet that big.
you realize jupiter is over 300 times more massive than earth, right?

10x earth is nothing. earth is fucking tiny.

>>53950812
wrong. they can't see it because it's blocked by all kinds of shit and our telescopes aren't so great with astronomically small things like planets. we're better at stars because they're fucking enormous and bright and there are some physics that help us.

>>53950853
>How far can a planet be until it stops rotating around the sun? That's the cut-off for what's considered part of the solar system or not, right?
depends on the size of the planet really.
>>
>>53944746
