Meh, not bad. I've never been but from my experience it tends to be a less touristy version of Amsterdam, a lot of working-class people. Probably a lot of cool old architecture and history stuff, so if that's your thing you should definitely visit. And, of course, wherever you go in the Netherlands you should visit an art museum, even if you're not into art. The art museums are really nice there.
The must-sees are Amsterdam and Den Haag imho (I also think Friesland is a very nice place to visit but it's a very "middle of nowhere" type destination, so it's certainly not for everybody).

>>53851203
Well hey that works too, lol
>>
>>53851322

Sounds pretty cool. I hope I can plan well enough to last a few extra days to visit those cities.

>>
>>53851519
> I hope I can plan well enough to last a few extra days to visit those cities
Do what you feel like doing, vacations should never feel too forced. That said, some of the greatest experiences happen when you force yourself out of your comfort zone, so if time permits I definitely recommend a trip to Den Haag, and maybe even consider Friesland.
>how expensive is it over there compared to the UK?
No idea, my guess is more expensive but you'd have to ask one of our resident Dutchies ITT.

You should read some Kierkegaard if you're into books that change your frame of mind, he's a Danish philosopher and he writes a lot about happiness and the meaning of life and stuff like that, a really good classic.
>>
>>53851870
Well, I'm not really going on vacation, I'm just going there over there for a few days to meet with some people. But since I'll be over there I might as well look around and visit some places. Hopefully I'll be able to visit some other time and get to know the place, , since it seems i'll be visiting it a few times every year if things go well.

thanks for the tips senpai.

If it's anything like Jamaica you should be fine as long as you confine yourself to touristy areas like the beach and the surrounding shops. If you avoid ghettos and obvious scams you should be fine during the daytime.

Definitely seek the council of one of our Bahamians, though. I only went to Freeport when I visited the Bahamas, and that was before 9/11, so the trip for you may be quite different.

Rotterdam is good to see. The city, especially the skyline, differs a lot from Amsterdam because Rotterdam, including parts of the port were destroyed by German bombers in WWII. So if you pay attention when entering the city you can see old stops and new starts.

So yeah, visit Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Amsterdam is probably more touristy and more things to do, most of the museums are there.
You can grab a boatride in the Rotterdam harbor to get a glimpse of the size of it. Go to Euromast for a view of Rotterdam. Close to Rotterdam there is Kinderdijk which is a series of Windmills (warning: lots of Chinese tourists here).
If you have the time, also visit Amsterdam, it will differ from Rotterdam. If you like museums, go to the Rijksmuseum. Also visit red light district and walk along the grachten.

If you want a taste of the Netherlands too, go to a Pannenkoekenhuis (maybe better to do this in Rotterdam and not in touristy areas).

How many hours by train or whatever is it to get from there to Amsterdam?
>>
>>53884896
From Rotterdam to Amsterdam is 1 hour 10m (from train station to train station).

From Rotterdam to Kinderdijk is about an hour.

You can check all public transport, routes, fares etc on 9292.nl

This one is pretty nice, what sucks though is that the majority of beaches have resorts built on them. They can't own the beach, they have to let people through, but you can't use any of the facilities there if you're not staying at the resort.

Is there no way around this at all?
Don't you guys need dishwashers for your resorts or something? Anything?
>>
>>53890417
The natives don't seem to mind. There are a handful of super nice none-resort beaches they all go to.

Brah, the islands aren't what you think they are. You get away from the beautiful beaches and it's a third world shit hole full of people who, despite being well Into their 60's, still act like their in high-school. Everything is expensive, the roads are shit, health care is shit and the tourists are shit. I lived in the states for 23 years before moving here. Personally, I grew up poor so this place is just something I'm use to.
>>
>>53893147
Depends on how rich you are,the differences between
rich and poor are hella big here.
>>
>>53893446
Yeah but even if you're he'll a rich, you still have to interact with and be seen by the proletariat. The islands are only so big. Keep in mind I can only speak for the USVI.

Like my fellow virgin was saying, it's pretty and there are some really cool things about living here but it's also kind of a shithole... at least here in the VI. If you like drinking and hanging out with (fellow?) degenerates it is easy to keep yourself occupied. Lots of loose women and cheap booze.

There are a lot of interesting people here but they are vastly outnumbered by self-important snowflake people. We call it Peter pan syndrome. It's like they moved here to spite their friends and relatives because they weren't happy with their own achievements. They get back at them by posting pictures of themselves sitting on a beach while they spend most of their time toiling in a restaurant sucking up to tourists.

It's not a big fun adventure if you think that's what it will be like. Then again I've lived here since I was a kid so I'm probably cynical about it all.

What if one is to be employed, say as a journalist or linguist? Can life be comfy in an island like Aruba or Sint Maarten (that is to say an island with not a ton of poverty)? If someone has already "made it" monetarily, would you say it's a good idea to move there? I'm introverted and enjoy doing shit that most would consider "boring", like walking around the beach and hiking, so keep that in mind.
>>
>>53896944

I've met people that fit that description that are able to be happy here. You will have trouble adjusting. Trust me on this. It can be very rewarding but bear in mind that it's a small island and you will run out of trails to hike if you don't own a boat. The thing I like most about living stateside is that if I want to be in a new place I've never been it's relatively easy.
>>
>>53897957
Realistically, if I move to Sint Maarten, how expensive/difficult would it be to rent a boat and travel throughout the Antilles?

>why Sint Maarten?
Dutch Caribbean is the best caribbean, also just seems like a nice island. Also I like the closeness of all the Antilles Islands, not sure how much I'd like living so far away from the main Caribbean islands in a place like Curaçao (also wouldn't care much for being that close to South America).
>why not Saint Martin?
I've been told it's much more shitty than Sint Maarten, also I'm not a fan of the French. And also the whole "Dutch Caribbean a best" thing.

Ik kan ook een beetje Nederlands spreken.
