Like anything, you've should really have some understanding of what you're investing into. It's not much different to investing into a company. If you have reason to believe that the country/company is going to improve for whatever reason then it's worth a punt. The major difference being that countries artificially inflate, or deflate their currencies for trade so it's a lot of homework. I'm sure people with inside knowledge on such things do it all the time.

desu you have to remember at the time this was completely unheard of, literally no one anywhere bothered with realism or representative art at all.

People like Durer might have made dull paintings by modern standards, but things like pic related were revolutionary steps in art

(specifically this in basically portraying himself as Jesus)

meanwhile art elsewhere was far too caught up in convention and archetypes for any meaningful change

>I just don't feel challenged by them
you know nothing about art and its history then
not to mention even "photorealistic" art was often used to portray very deep or complex scenes

I think your issue is more with Reformation era German art where the focus was technical skill and perfect realism over any deep meaning

there is a painting of several farm animals (pic related) which was one of the most celebrated paintings in all of Europe at the time for both its size and its realism.

now however its fairly dull.

either way though if anything realism opens up new avenues for art beyond very basic crude representations

are all very good portraying a wide range of things from dramatic re-telling of ancient history, to an almost fantastical yet ordinary riverscape showing the beauty in day to day life, to the horrors of war

pic related is annother fantastic exampel of the power of realistic styles
you can really feel the emotion of Ivan IV here simply because of the skill taken with portraying his reaction to killing his own son

in the Japanese painting you can hardly tell the emotions behind it at all, its just some scowl with hardly any human connection.

I like the use of light in the European paintings, it is magnificent. but the shapes and colors are boring to me. maybe the japanese painting is normal to them but having been bombarded with images of european art my whole life I see the japanese painting as pushing the boundaries, edging towards abstraction. which of course leads to shit like Warhol who imo was the real genius of the 20th century, showing us the beauty in the everyday. you wanna talk about the power of realistic styles

this is not any better
the Japanese like nearly every other culture didn't care about emotional impacts but rather valued art more for its meditative aspects, which is why you have so many "peaceful" landscape paintings, which although pretty are not terribly impressive or moving.

desu Christianity combined with Roman-greek ideas of the human form is what pushed European art so far beyond the rest

Buddhism, Islam, and other assorted pagan faiths are not terribly conducive to diverse and moving art.

annother painting, my favorite depiction of war in all its brutality and chaos, the masses of men almost merge together as a single entity in the melee, yet the use of lighting and position among other highly developed European ideas draws your eye to the key figures in the scene to tell a story through each of them.

being an Orientalist is all well and good but ultimately its just due to your own isolation and the "east" having this fantastical quality.

here is one that is bordering on realism and expertly uses the light and feeling of movement to show these two men almost as monsters.

here's something simple but also great to show the power of realism, look at the detail and emotion on the faces of all the party goers
the painting as a whole is a scene in itself

I feel like an asshole for posting such a lowres pic of a Picasso but hey, I love realism as much as anyone but this type of thing really speaks to me. To me this captures the movement and emotion of the scene as much as anything. Picasso found people on the fringes of society like these jugglers and painted them, he humanized them, these people were just gypsies looked down on by most people. but here we see them not flying through the air on trapeze but in a mostly ordinary domestic scene, although the boy is practicing a circus act

If Atlantic Canada left Canada and joined the UK, i dont think anyone would mind
plus, since they're more ethnically British (English/Irish/Cornish/Scottish/Welsh) than the UK, it makes sense.

abstract styles are good too, but Asian art isn't abstract, its something else entirely with completely different goals in mind compared to European art.
beyond that its also very static
European art is very alive and active, the realistic paintings look they could come to life in a moment

then you have works like this where its almost purely an image of momentum and vibrant emotion alive and invigorated on the canvas, like as if the very idea of "movement" was painted down.

>4% difference between the highest and the lowest "satisfied or very satisfied with life in general"
m8 you literally can make 4% of people say they're satisfied or dissatisfied with life by sending them free samples of soap in the mail. what a worthless statistic to even drag up. and between 2003-2011? the years when statscan was bleeding out the ass thanks to cuts? you could reference a burger joint's customer feedback box and get more telling results.
