It's just plain wrong to say Buddhism is it's most popular religion and Shinto is second. Most "Christians" in Western countries are non-practising. The majority of Japanese people hold Shinto beliefs and do things like pray at Shinto shrines.
Shinto has a lot of overlap with Buddhism. So to distinguish the two is a little misleading, especially if your map is not including non-religious groups. They tend to distinguish between belief in Shinto and being a part of a Shinto sect, which like distinguishing between a normal Christian and a monk.
The second most popular religion if you class Shinto, Buddhism and their sects as the same thing is Christianity.

Religion in Japan is syncretic, just ask any japanese. Of course it varies from person to person, but most believe both in kami and Buddha.
There's a common phrase in Japan that says they're "born shinto, marry christian and die buddhist" since their stance on religion is so open and syncretic. For instance, in new years they commonly go to Shinto shrines for hatsumode, but their funerals are buddhist, and many people marry in christian fashion.
