Oba kraje utrzymywały w międzywojniu przyjazne stosunki, nic dziwnego, skoro regent admirał Miklós Horthy darzył Józefa Piłsudskiego ogromnym szacunkiem. Gdy w 1919 roku gościł nad Wisłą, Polacy wiwatowali na cześć węgierskiego przyjaciela.
Okazja do przetestowania przyjaźni przyszła niedługo - z chwilą wybuchu wojny polsko-bolszewickiej. Także tym razem, gdy ważyły się losy Polski, a może i Europy, Węgry stanęły na wysokości zadania. Gotowe były nawet przysłać własne wojska, ale Czechosłowacja nie zgodziła się, aby obca armia maszerowała przez jej terytorium. Nawet w słusznej sprawie...
Polacy musieli radzić sobie sami, ale gdyby nie węgierski sprzęt wojskowy, a w szczególności miliony sztuk broni i amunicji, o "Cudzie nad Wisłą" moglibyśmy w ogóle nie usłyszeć. Kilkadziesiąt godzin przed decydującym starciem w obronie Warszawy, do Skierniewic przyjechał węgierski pociąg towarowy, wiozący m.in. 22 miliony kul wyprodukowanych w fabryce Manfreda Weissa.

W lipcu 1939 roku nazistowski dyktator zaproponował bowiem węgierskim władzom, z którymi pozostawał dotąd w dobrych relacjach, udział w planowanym ataku na Polskę. Węgrzy już pod koniec kwietnia 1939 roku postawili sprawę jasno. – W akcji zbrojnej przeciwko Polsce ani pośrednio, ani bezpośrednio nie jesteśmy skłonni uczestniczyć. Pod pojęciem «pośrednio» rozumiem każde żądanie przejścia oddziałów niemieckich pieszo czy na pojazdach mechanicznych przez nasz kraj w celu zaatakowania Polski. Żądania takie będą odrzucone. Węgry uchodziły za sojusznika Niemiec (sytuacja zmieniła się w listopadzie 1940 roku, gdy kraj przystąpił do tzw. Paktu Trzech), ale Budapeszt nieoficjalnie pomagał uchodźcom znad Wisły. Oblicza się, że schronienie na węgierskiej ziemi znalazło nawet 140 tys. Polaków. Osadzani w obozach internowania, często opuszczali je na własną rękę. Węgierscy rządzący na ogół przymykali na to oczy.
Na Węgry trafił też pracownik polskiego MSZ Henryk Sławik. Tam, do spółki z miejscowym działaczem politycznym i społecznym Józsefem Antallem, a także kilkoma innymi współpracownikami, organizował pomoc dla żydowskich uchodźców z Polski. Był prezesem Obywatelskiego Komitetu do spraw Opieki nad Polskimi Uchodźcami na Węgrzech.

Okupanci ściągnęli do walczącej Warszawy posiłki złożone z żołnierzy różnej nacji - tysiące spośród nich było zwyczajnymi bandytami, którzy właśnie w polskiej stolicy szukali okazji do "wykazania się". Dowodzeni przez degeneratów pokroju Oskara Dirlewangera czy Bronisława Kamińskiego, bez pardonu urządzali rzezie niewinnych cywilów.
W okolicach Warszawy rozlokowano też Węgrów - trzy dywizje z II Korpusu Rezerwowego oraz 1 Dywizję Honwedów. Ci jednak walczyć z Polakami nie chcieli. Po raz kolejny długa, wielesetletnia przyjaźń obu narodów wzięła górę. – Większość członków rodzin tych ludzi walczy w podziemiu, w partyzantce albo w Warszawie. Właśnie dlatego prawie nie opuszczają domu, boją się spotkania z Niemcami. Węgrów się nie boją. Szybko się z nami zaprzyjaźniają....” - relacjonował pobyt na podwarszawskiej prowincji huzar István Szabadhegy.
