I'm guessing those places were named by the first settlers that came there and my guess is those settlers were originally from those places.

Beacuse they expanded rapidly and needed tens of thousands names for new towns and streets. We have the same thing with communist-era urban settlements which were founded during forced industrialization. Every city has Lenin square, main street is always Kirov street, etc.

You could say the same about the former Spanish colonies. How many places are named after saints? How many towns are named "Santiago de X"?
