Our education system is pretty effective _and_ highly egalitarian; even the dumbest fucktards who should probably be sterilized for the greater good have a good chance of learning how to read, write and do basic math in school. This raises our average scores above many countries where those people would never receive an education worth shit. I suppose that's a nice thing in some ways.
That only really applies to primary schools, though. This country does not really know how to value geniuses or visionaries, encourage people to stand out, etc. As you climb higher up the education ladder, the quality drops quite a bit until you reach the over-bureaucratized universities where one's skill at office politics can largely replace talent and effort.
The Swedish language has been a bit of a sore spot for a long time. I can understand why it's mandatory --- Swedish aristocrats and clergy were basically our overlords for a long time and played a large role in the rise of the current republic of Spurdo and the glorious battle against the forces of Mordor. And in the coastal parts of the country there's still a large Swedish-speaking minority that may deserve some rights. But in the rest of Finland you can go through your life without hearing any of it, unless you accidentally switch your TV to a channel broadcasting something in Swedish. You can probably guess how hard it is to motivate students to learn Swedish in eastern Finland.
