http://aa.com.tr/en/economy/economists-forecast-brazils-worst-recession-since-1901/500503

It is also now believed that the economy contracted by 3.71 percent in 2015, the year in which the country entered a technical recession -- defined as two or more consecutive quarters of negative growth.

If confirmed, the recession could be the worst Brazil has experienced since reliable records began in 1901 and the first time the country has seen back-to-back years in recession since 1930-31.

let it burn down tbqhwy

The youth in this country is waking up to the lie and abandoning the left; joining centrist or far right movements, we're also purging the gommies in the process so it's not a total loss.

We might see a new Vargas in a few years so it's getting pretty exciting.

Aren't you scared that Dilma will start up guerilla groups to overthrow the government again?
>>
>>53164467
Brazilians WILL come into this thread and blame everything on communism.
>>
>>53164773

She won't get any support, believe it or not the political left in Brazil thinks she hasn't gone far enough in her reforms.
>>
>>53164820

This.

The true problem is rich people fleeing the country with their money.
>>
>>53164773
She is a puppet with zero leadership skills, the one we need to be wary of is Lula and his personal army (The MST, Movimento sem Terra) who already threatened to "unleash it" if Dilma and the PT falls.

A lot of higher-ups in the army hate Dilma and the left for "gutting" the army so we might have the armed forces on our side if there's ever a conflict.

There's a reason they are leaving the country and that is our retarded protectionist market, "protecting" things that aren't even there in the first place.

And it's not even the "rich people", it's the skilled middle class that's leaving.

What did you expect from a country under socialism for 13 years?

People fell for the free lunch myth and now have 5 months worth of their work stolen by the government every year in taxes. Since the Petrobras and BNDES corruption scandals were revealed, the financial crisis began, and what the government is going to do about it you might ask?
Of course tell the slaves to work harder and raise taxes so they can cover the losses that are their own fault, whether through mismanagement or outright theft.
This is the situation we live in now.

Remember to give 50% of all you produce to the government and everything will be FREE. Let big daddy government take care of you, bureaucrats are infalible, morally inviolable and know better than you what you need and how your money should be spent.
Take a look at our FREE healthcare.

No hard feelings either way. It is not for civil liberties that this is being done so whatever. The actual referendum on the issue kind of mad it clear that this is what the people wants and this is what democracy is about.

Do I think we'll turn into a hellhole where people with power will have more power and the average citizen will see none of the benefits? Kinda.
>>
>>53165267
Of course it's gonna be the law-abiding civilians who will buy guns for self-defense.

Do you think a criminal gives a fuck about gun laws or any law for that matter? Here it's extremely easy for anyone who doesn't care about the law to buy a gun, you can go to the nearest favela and buy even an automatic weapon if you have enough money.

We never approved this gun control, it was IMPOSED on us by the government. There was a referendum held in 2005 about it and nearly 70 million people voted against it, that's more votes than any president ever had to give you a perspective.

We have so much crime now and people live in so much fear of being robbed or assassinated on the streets, on the work and even inside their own homes. The gun control must be repealed at all costs, it had fuck all to do with safety or preventing crime, it was always about control.

Brazil's internal market was a credit-based economy: "I might starve and even accumulate a huge debt but as long as I can allocate a significant amount of my monthly income for 5 years to pay my brand new Golâ„¢ everything is alright. Keeping up with with the Joneses and maintaining my bragging rights was never cheap, I guess."
This irrational consumerist behavior, while self-destructive as proved by tens of millions of Brazilians being indebted, it has also helped to spin the 'cogs of the economy' as it generated demand.
Failure to properly recover the manufacturing industry has also led to an increase of the importance of commodities on foreign trade, a very volatile source of revenue due to price fluctuations and the economic situation of consumer markets. In fact, we would be much better off if we were to use these very same resources to manufacture our own products; I mean, how many processors can we make with 1 ton of Silicon, for example?

One month accounting for a place to stay, car rent and having nice parties every day of the week. It could be less if you're thinking about staying on the beachfront and going on a boat.

> as you have a top 10 economy in nominal terms

>nominal terms
>>
>>53181348
We are not in a credit crisis, personal debt has nothing to do with this. Sure, defaults are high but it's not out of control.

>Failure to properly recover the manufacturing industry
That's because: 1) Exchange rates are high, industries are being crunched by it adding up to the low demand, 2) Government subsidies are not going to be approved so soon due to the clusterfuck it is right now, they can't even approve the inflation ceiling.

>In fact, we would be much better off if we were to use these very same resources to manufacture our own products;
No we wouldn't. Read up on competitive advantage. We are better off buying them.
Plus why you would want to allocate more manufacturing/production to our domestic market? Look at the shitstorm we are with most of our stuff coming from China, imagine if it was made here instead.
>>
>>53181815
>1) Exchange rates are high, industries are being crunched by it adding up to the low demand

If you're talking about monetary exchange rates, then that might be a good thing, export-oriented economies tend to have high exchange rates as it represents a competitive advantage. Look at the Chinese Yuan, the UAE Dirham, and the deliberate devaluation of the Japanese Yen (part of Abenomics) for references.

>2) Government subsidies are not going to be approved so soon due to the clusterfuck it is right now, they can't even approve the inflation ceiling.

This political crisis must be solved ASAP, as it's the major cause for the current capital flight and because it's an issue that requires attention and cooperation of all branches of the federal government.

>No we wouldn't. Read up on competitive advantage. We are better off buying them.

I believe there are a few ways to offset this, there's a large margin of improvement for our productivity which can be attained with investments in education, automation and infrastructure. Keeping the money within our borders can benefit the government in many ways.

>Look at the shitstorm we are with most of our stuff coming from China, imagine if it was made here instead.

Could you elaborate more?

>If you're talking about monetary exchange rates, then that might be a good thing,
Yeah, but you're talking about how our economy was de-industrialized and relied upon commodities. What is your point after all?

>This political crisis must be solved ASAP,
Sure, but you must remember that the executive is not the only guilty of this. The congress keeps playing power games to destabilize the executive and that is causing a gridlock in our entire political/fiscal system.

>I believe there are a few ways to offset this,
This is something that required a fuckton of budget and time. If we want to improve these factors you pointed out we need to end corruption. The current public-private partnership to boost infrastructure and education has caused nothing but the enrichment of a few people in the upper ranks, meanwhile our capacity hasn't increased much.

>Could you elaborate more?
We rely on Chinas' devaluation of the Yuan to outsource the production of the end-goods. If we did that ourselves, during a crisis like we are, the industry would be impacted even more by the inflation, low demand and etc. Sure we would benefit from exports but can you state with certainty that this would be enough to cause a break even in our current account? Imho it wouldn't.

Being one of the countries in GDP doesn't mean shit when your population is so big. We'll always be behind by a factor of 2 or more in GDP per capita from the true great powers and important nations.

Brazil's big GDP roughly means we have a lot of people. Any serious person will know we're a backwards, pathetic nation that shouldn't be taken too seriously. We're not even a threat to anyone. The other Latin American nations have at least the same potential as we do and they shouldn't look at Brazil as any sort of leader either.

Being as good as Uruguay would make as a relevant power? hahaha that would make us an overachieving Latin American country and that doesn't mean much worldwide. The south and southeast is roughly as good as Uruguay and I don't think the rest of the country can catch up. We're pretty much as good as we'll ever get.
>>
>>53186341

Jesus Christ can you read? Imagine a country the size of Brazil with a standard of living like Uruguay, it would make us huge in relevance. Relevance is about economy, income, military and soft power.
>>
>>53187003

China is relevant for many other reasons besides GDP.

If you look at their neighbouring countries they're roughly as advanced as Western countries. The folks in China are genetically close to them and are very similar in any relevant quantitative trait that you can measure. Whatever the West can do the Chineses can do as well and maybe even better, and that's why they're seen as a potential superpower.

Any person with a minimal understanding of the world will know Brazilians and Chineses aren't the same.

>>53187121

As I said, the South and Southeast are already roughly equal to Uruguay. "We" don't have the same standard of living as them because of other part of the countries that probably won't ever be able to catch up.

Import taxes usually start at 60%. Imported electronics here usually cost double what they cost in the rest of the world. The only affordable things (food, clothing, electronics etc.) are overpriced and low quality versions of the same thing sold outside. Even with low taxes it's expensive anyway because there is no competition from imports. The government celebrated when Apple built an iPhone assembly factory in Brazil, paying less taxes than the import ones, but the prices stayed the same because they're not morons, they know people who want will buy them anyway at the same price, they just profit more. That's how protectionism works here.

As for welfare, seriously? Our government tries to give free health, education on all levels and monthly cash payments for people under a certain per capita income, with our per capita income at 1/5 of the developed countries average, how do you think that works? Everything has insane taxes built in and the public services in most cases are still africa-tier

>Yeah, but you're talking about how our economy was de-industrialized and relied upon commodities. What is your point after all?

I fail to see how having high exchange rates and a de-industrialized economy is mutually exclusive. Of the three examples I've listed, only UAE has been traditionally known as a commodity exporter. Having high exchange rates makes imports in comparison to locally produced goods.

>This is something that required a fuckton of budget and time.

Long-term 'solutions' for long-standing problems, something that unfortunately, the government is not very good at.

>If we did that ourselves, during a crisis like we are, the industry would be impacted even more by the inflation, low demand and etc.

Unfortunately, there isn't such a thing as a crisis-proof economy but then again I believe it's better than relying too much on commodities, you can't put all the eggs on the same basket.

>Sure we would benefit from exports but can you state with certainty that this would be enough to cause a break even in our current account? Imho it wouldn't.

Almost if not every 'successful' economy in the world has a highly developed manufacturing and services industry, they offer much more potential than a solely resource based one.
While the benefits of such a system might not be immediately obvious to society in general, things might start getting interesting when you consider that to reach such a state you must have a highly educated workforce and a functioning infrastructure, increasing the intellectual output of our population in the fields of natural and human sciences would be a driving force for positive changes in this country, IMO.

Also don't forget that one of the criticized points of Plano Real was the fact that for much of its implementation the BRL was pegged to the USD. While the closure of the internal market for much of the military dictatorship period was the major factor for the decadence of our industry as they had to compete with external companies which originated from much more competitive environments, the way how it was comparatively cheap to import stuff didn't help either.

That really says something. Transport infrastructure is pretty much stagnant here in São Paulo. Expansions on our overloaded subway system are being constantly delayed with escalating costs, our monorail system is completely pathetic with only one station ready after more than 20 years since they started to build it and many of the bus lines are expensive as hell and are served by dirty buses that release more coal than a redneck Cummins truck on Wide Open Throttle, not very good for your lucks.
