Foreign policy isn't based on hope.
The US is deeply entrenched in a regional order which tightly excludes Iran, despite Obama's best efforts. Walking away from this will make Obama's "red line" look like child's play. Every ally on the planet will wake up with a fever.
Iran has well established itself in the anti-US axis, and has supported any group, including Sunnis like AQ, in order to kill Americans. I just can't see a 180 turn on their orientation when it's so built into the basis for the Islamic Revolution.
Dictators aren't always the most receptive to their own people. The Ayatollah's will not take kindly to overly much Westernization, and will likely seek to retain their "resistance economy" for the rainy day everybody knows is coming when the bomb is built.
But, despite myself, I hope they do Westernize and the government moderates. But I wouldn't plan around it.
