The 13 Colonies are generally known as the First British Empire, because we had hardly any other territory. After we lost the American Independence War to rebels, France, Spain and Netherlands, we had nothing but a few trading ports abroad and what would become Canada.
Then the Napoleonic Wars happened.
Then after 1815, Britain started to build a new Empire. This is the more well-known one. It's quite an incredible comeback, if you think about it.
