Pine branches thing is a Japanese tradition, right? To help souls of passed away relatives find their way home.

Or is it a mix of European and Japanese traditions?

I'm mainly interested in the fact that precisely pine is used.

I don't think it really counts, but I like Kazuo Ishiguro novels (who's Japanese, but writes in English) - especially Never Let Me Go and Remains of the Day.

The only Japanese novel I've ever read is Welcome to the NHK. I'm going to read No Longer Human soon though.

how is it? meant to read it a while ago but havent gotten around to it yet. the anime is top tier of course
ive heard of ishiguro but never read him, his newest novel sounds quite interesting though

you'll enjoy no longer human. though part of the reason i asked is because i obviously read the english translation, and though it was good, it didn't blow me away in the manner you'd expect a classic of japanese (or any nation's) literature would. i'm sure that's due to what's lost in translation. the title 'no longer human' is even considered an imperfect translation by many.

have you seen the aoi bungaku version?

Welcome to the NHK is better than I thought it would be as a novel. It's very short though, so it doesn't include nearly as much material as the anime or manga, but it has quite a unique tone compared to both the others. It feels a lot more depressing, and the characters seem a lot more batshit crazy.

>have you seen the aoi bungaku version?
I've downloaded it, but haven't got around to watching it yet. I was trying to read the novel first before I watched the abridged anime adaptation, but I might end up gettign too impatient for that.

>How do you expect Japanese think European culture compared to American culture?
I think Japanese idolize Paris in particular, which can be very disappointing when they visit.
I think Japanese respect Germans for their work ethic, and view British as gentlemen.
They probably know Italian food as well.
I think they regard Americans as less well-mannered and cultured than Europeans.
>How do Europeans want Japanese to view their culture?
The majority of people here does not consider how others view their culture.
I think I would like foreigners to view the Dutch as cunning sailors and tradesmen, who managed to carve out a large empire in the colonial period despite our small size.
I would also like people to know of the Dutch painters.
I couldn't speak for the other European countries.

As an American, everything outside America is unknown to me. We have 50 different territories, a lot of which are bigger than many European countries, with differing political views, cultures, religions, etc and only two countries that border us.

I could drive 10 hours straight through Texas and still be in Texas, dying form the heat, while a few states away people are being bombarded by snow storms giving them a foot of snow each night.
>>
>>52992919
Thanks for your reply m8. (I don't know which language is convenient to you between Japanese and English, tho)
It's interesting you mentioned Dutch painter. ''girl with a peal earring'' is really popular and famous in Japan. When the picture came to National Japanese museum in Tokyo, I went to see it there and wait for almost 3 hours to watch. 2bh, my image of Netherlands is full of with tulips and windmills. Have you ever heard about ''house tembos'' in Kyousyu in Japan?

C and X (and Q and J and whatever else you want to include) may be useless orthographically, but they're also important for historical reasons and they make the language look prettier in writing.

"Goose/geese" is not illogical, it's an example of an apophonic plural, whereby the word's plural status is marked by changing the vowel sound. They are plentiful in the Germanic languages (with /o/ usually mutating to an "ai" or "ee" sound in English).

We should not be mean to English phonology.

Brits and Aussies do have the biggest bantz culture
>>
>>52993093
>How about legal prostitution, soft drug, and euthanasia?
We have this reputation, which some people view as degenerate, but we regard as common sense.
When we make laws like that, we consider the effect. We'd rather be able to oversee trade in drugs and prostitution than drive these people into doing crime. Outlawing either has proven not to be as effective, we simply consider the effect instead of the principle.
I think many people view us as degenerate because of these laws, which I don't like of course. And we were only the first to adopt them, now many western countries have laws with similar freedom to ours.

We mostly export agricultural products. The land is extremely flat and has good access to water, so farming here is relatively efficient and profitable.
Other great sources of export are Royal Shell and Philips, in other words exploit of third world countries and electronics.

Yes, but our government is not providing well enough for refugees. They stay in bad conditions (in sport halls) for weeks and then move to other sport halls.

Refugees say it's better to live "normally" in war than to be treated like trash elsewhere.

This is the governments fault becuase there are a LOT more volunteers availible than needed, so it's the lack of facilities. Not the willingness of the dutch

Basically everything, food as well. We mostly export those to neighbouring countries though, the flowers go around the world.

I don't know if this is true. If you become a dutch citizen you have to integrate into society. The government doesn't like when people can't speak the language, it becomes harder to survive in society.

Also when you can't find a job the government won't give you free money unless you are studying the dutch language.

I really doubt there's any way to do that with my chosen field of study. Really the only aspect of Japanese that I'm relatively good at is grammar, so it only seems like I'm good at it. I have a question to foreigners.

Is New Year's Day young people's day?

It is a traditional day in Japan.
There was the family system called '家制度' once.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ie_(Japanese_family_system)

New Year's Day is the core of that system in Japan tho.
The system was abolished now.

Thank you for replying my question.

Not to put too fine a point on it,
I thought the Ie(家父長制) was a little similar to patriarchy of Islam.
That's why it was abolished.
It had often too strong power.

Though, people still keep to the custom to some extent and it is necessary partially.
