Lack of faith in the government is part of that idea though.
The founding fathers knew government was a neccisary evil, and would screw people over first chance it got if they did not pre-empt it, so they made the constitution and the bill of rights as "chains" to control the government.
Inherent in the idea of america is that the government is a shit, its accepted, and faith is put into the founders system of keeping it from ever getting too out of hand.
Many nations colapse because people are always unhappy, its easy to find people who think everything should be different, but many of those people arent going to agree with what that different should be. So revolutions happen, but then things just fall apart.
Because distrust and suspicion of the government is inherent in our idea of government, and we have a big fat stick to bash the government with any time it gets uppity, being upset about the government only makes one more american, and america stronger. Because anyone elses government can just barge in and ruin everything for them, but our government has restrictions, and if they try to bypass them people simply become even more patriotic and tell them to piss off.
Every other country sees their government as a way to control the nation in a way beneficial to all, and they are founded on this idea. A government to them is inherently transitory, they see it as a tool for running a nation. The US on the other hand is a set of tools for the people to keep the government in check

1) we have a vast network of allies and we try to support them

The biggest bulkhead against a total American economic collapse is that their currency is the de facto currency of the international black market
Part of the reason for that is paradoxically because their cash is so easy to forge, so if Americans actually adopted non-meme currency and domestic banking and transaction practices that weren't subject to fraud they would immediately lose their special protected status as a trading economy.
