I've thought Swedes are pretty social. Many Finns find it weird that in Sweden they say things like "hi" to their neighbors and so on.
>>

Finns are just the most extreme of the nordics.
Swedes, danes and norwegians are social compared to finns but they're more like finns compared to the rest of the world.

Swedes are less social than us according to my experience though

I was in Warsaw a few years ago, waiting at a bus stop. A young woman came up, say Dian to me, said something in Polish, and offered me a cigarette. I revealed that I was an American. We talked, sat next to each other on the bus, and later that night I proudly pounded Polish pussy.

Miss you, Ania

why the fuck do people do this. there's always one on every bus/ferry/train car/whatever. you can always tell who it is the second you get in and look around, they always fat and look like they're slightly retarded (even if they aren't american).

Because its how you meet new people, like how the American guy above met a polish girl through small talk. Its just a way to pass the time and bullshit with someone.

Also edgy.

Americans might, not a thing in Finland at least.
>>
>>52961111
Bit of an exaggeration, but a lot of people would rather stand than sit down if there isn't like a meter of space between them and any other person sitting. In fact, a lot of people rather stand than sit next to someone on the bus/train. And it's common courtesy to ask "may I sit here" if you have the misfortune of having to sit next to someone else.
>>
>>52964363

I dont know what to write anymore as wild hate is filling my veins excuse me
>>
>>52963860
Were not socially autistic like retarded continentals but we also dont randomly sart chatting about our life stories on the bus. I think youre getting confused m8
>>
>>52964472
Also, small talk is literally not a thing in the Nordic countries. People will think you're either drunk, crazy or American if you strike conversation with random strangers.
>>
>>52964131
Depending on the size of it of course, but social rules are that a maximum of 1 person per 1,5 metre inside the bus stop unless the people there are friends or it's raining like fucking hell.

So normally you get 1-2 people under the roof and then a bunch of others outside.
>>
>>52964528
You guys are just severely autistic.
>>
>>52964472
And when you're sitting by the windows and someone sits next to you it's always pretty awkward to try to get out at your stop because no one really has the courage to say anything, and so they just hope the person realizes you're leaving by your gestures. But we're quite good at noticing when someone wants to leave.

I met some Portuguese people while I was on exchange. They thought the whole Nordic autism thing was bizarre (as there were a few of us from Finland, Sweden and Norway) but appreciated the honesty and straightforwardness.

We might be autistic but at least we don't waste your time and nerves with pointless bullshit at the bus stop.

I have been to several countries across continents and nowhere will this be justified.

The only country I been to where strangers are the ones initiating small talks probably means they are trying to rip you off or in great need for help, and 90% of the time it's the first option especially in shithole countries.

Have you ever used a bus before that wasn't regional? (Greyhound or Megabus)

You don't do this in a metropolitan area it isn't practical. If you did talk to everyone at every bus stop you would be having the same bullshit conversations with people like 2-3 times a day. If I couldn't get on the bus without someone talking to me there is no way I would ever leave the house.

Just different preferences and cultural standards for politeness in social situations. Everybody in these threads tends to exaggerate on each side, but I think what it comes down to is just respect for personal space and privacy. From my experience we also tend to be more tolerant of silences in conversation, and generally not being around people as often. It's not objectively better or worse, just different.

It depends. Mostly upper middle class villages like mine are (were) usually fine, we can (could) leave cars and house doors unlocked without problems, worst kind of vandalism is (was) bus stops and the likes getting smeared with graffiti.
But since last year's sandnigger infestation started, burglaries have increased tenfold, not a week without a report of some home getting broken into, while it used to be a once to twice per year thing earlier (3.5k inhabitants, and we haven't even taken any sandshits in, apparently they come from neighbouring tons/cities on their looting sprees)
>>
You can start talking to a Finn you don't know but be aware that when you ask "how are you" you might not get the answer the answer you want("fine"). If someone is feeling shitty they will tell you no matter how depressing it is. And people are quite direct so your American small talk rules won't apply. Like if someone thinks American politics suck they will say it to you.

Yes you can get sick once and a while with mild illnesses, but if you're not a NEET, getting sick at the wrong time (major exams, important work week) is terrible

It's better to be sick once a year than 3 times.

I usually get a minor cold, and occasionally a touch of food poisoning. No time is a good time to be sick, but unless someone is worthy of quarantine, I don't see the point of avoiding a natural drive for conversation for fear of germs.

Let's get away from that though; for most people it's just a generally accepted social anxiety.

And Finland definitely is not autism paradise. There's so many unwritten rules you need to be aware of, and since people don't talk so much you need to be able to read from their subtle body language and tone of speech what they're trying to say.
>>
>>52966791
I test the waters. Usually two questions - the first being an inquiry to the person's well being. It's very easy to tell when a person doesn't have any inclination to talk, and I don't press any further than what is essentially an invitation to verbal intercourse.

Neither of us lives in Japan, Kenji. The people I have the most luck chatting up are tourists from your side of the border.

Actually, I travel by bike and I've been having problems this winter. Our appartment building has a bike shed, but it's overflowing so I'm having to leave my bike outside for the night. I have to warm up the breaks, gears and bell every time before taking off and it's annoying.

I think it's usually the Irish goodbye in the US, with the explanation that Irish people get so drunk that they just stumble out without saying anything.

This happened to me as well, some old dude started talking to me as we waited for the train. In general people are more social when you're traveling by train than by bus. Maybe because trains are the least individualistic mode of transportation there is (at least on land), based on the number of passengers and frequency of stops. So there's more of a connection between passengers.

American niceness is generally seen as suspicious and/or insincere ass kissing here, so our normal probably seems excessively rude to you.

By Dutch reasoning forwardness and directness are virtues though, we kind of take pride in speaking our minds even if its offensive because anything less would be seen insincerity or weakness. That's probably why we can come across as cunts to people from more delicate/sensitive cultures.

and so you are sitting there, the whole time, just waiting to somehow see her, you know if you try to scratch your shoulder or something it would end up really awkward so you just dont even attempt anything..
