Just came back from a two day trip in Leuven. As I the only not ethnically Belgian in my group (Spanish) one of the Flemish guy we met there first wasn't fond of me. As he asked me where I'm from and I told him that I'm Walloon he somehow got happy and we started singing the national anthem. Some other guys joined us and we had a fucking good time talking in Flemish, French and English with each other.

I got a similar situation some months ago when visiting Doornik/Tournai, my brother knew some people there and although we mostly talked in English to each other we really felt like we're a country after all, perhaps due to all the similarities.

Again, biased opinion. I definitely think modern Western societies can't succeed without a stable population. And as Belgians don't give enough births we need immigration, may it please you or not. Imho the government should do more for a higher birth rate amongst ethnic Belgians though, and make foreigners assimilate more and prevent ghettos like nowadays well known Moleenbeek. I know a shitload of people whose grandparents were Italian or Moroccan, and the only thing that isn't Belgian is their name, otherwise being blond blue eyed people who definitely don't look Southern. Because we've had a history of literally oppressing the other main culture of our country, while the Swiss never did this. There's not much else to it, and it's mostly a mentality older people have.
