The conflict going on is basically on a micro scale insurgency and the narcos are using military level firearms and tactics. I think it should be investigated, no doubt, but knowing that these people had in fact fired at the Mexican army units, I have no doubt that they are guilty. And I don't see how they could be convicted of as anything but guilty. As I understand, the MX armed forces generally issue a kill on sight order when fired upon because they believe through experience that narcos when captured are usually released during trial due to payoffs, connections or other forms of corruption so it's just simpler to shoot them on sight once it's verified that they are in fact enemy combatants. That is not at all in any way a perfect system, but it is effective.
I think that this should be investigated and that all points should be covered to ensure that who the military killed were in fact guilty, but if the Mexican troops story is verified as correct, no charges should be pressed against them.

It's a case-by-case thing, I have family members who are cops and it's not like I'm scared of them, but just looking at cops it's plain to see that they are generally just young dumb fucks and middle aged dickheads, the kind to import their wives from the Phillipines because they have no social skills, and having a bunch of young idiots and old guys trying to seem tough be given guns and authority isn't a comforting thought. The times I have had to call the cops, they have been no help, and they shot and killed some dude in my hometown who was just out for a jog, and also shot and killed a mentally ill guy in my town who wasn't doing anything dangerous, just acting erratic, and in fact that guy's family had called the cops only to ask them to help find him and calm him down. If you live in an upper class or mostly white town this stuff probably doesn't reach you but if you grow up lower class or in a mixed race town, people are being shot and killed around you all the time and it gives you a cynical outlook. Cops aren't special, they're just random assholes with a shitty job that leads to PTSD/some other kind of insanity, has alot of wiggle room for corruption, who get to carry guns and exercise authority.
