I just want to be able to play piano and sing Szomorú Vasárnap in the moonlight in the foier of my house in rural Hungary. Is that too much to ask? ;_;
>>52835459
Learn Croatian, it's better. Cyrillic is useful to know but has several letters and spellings that are just retarted.
Also don't learn Danish, it's the worst language. Learn Norwegian, they'll understand you just fine.
>>52835459
It's not that spooky and even then, serbs use latin half of the time anyway. And if you're planning to learn russian as well...
I mean, ultimately, it's a personal thing, I prefer serbian because of the accent and because it's a bit harder sounding, but you'll be able to communicate with both in the end anyway.
>>52835570
If I only cared about being understood I'd just speak English. Its nearly insulting to reside in a country and learn a language that is mutually intelligible instead of just the nation's language.
>>52835636
Realistically, I'll never learn either. I already have doubts that I'll even learn Danish. Pardon my ignorance, but where does Slovene fall in the Serbo-Croatian map? Is it even included? I don't know much about Slovenia in general.

>slovene, serbo-croatian
It's kinda like the scandi languages or maybe like the dutch-german thing.
The grammar is different, but a lot of words are similar and I'd say most words at least have the same root.
It's not completely mutually intelligible, but a lot of slovenes pick up serbian simply by going on vacation and watching a bit of TV.
>>52835808
I plan to, but whenever I hit a bump in the road I lose all motivation and halt my "studies" for weeks. I'll try my hardest though, for you Slovene brother.

I want to learn Dutch, which is sort of a meme language, but I can't find a recommended way to study it online outside of Duolingo with something like a great textbook or site.
>>52836676
Pick up the Teach Yourself Dutch book. I think Teach Yourself is usually regarded as a "beginner" resource but its incredibly helpful and will at least get you started I think. Look for a download of Pimsleur's Danish course as well. You shouldn't have much of a problem with Dutch since its basically the closest thing to English in a real, and thriving language today.
>>52836736
Sweet, thank you. I tried digging through the dozen books my library had and couldn't find anything, but I'll try these.
>>52836765
You can probably find one dirt cheap on Amazon, I found one for a dollar at a second hand book store by chance. If you wanted to actually get a more extensive course you could look at Living Language's Dutch course.
>>52836822
Alright then. Did you mean to recommend the Pimsleur Danish course too, or was that a typo?
>>52836872
Oh sorry, just a typo, I'm very tired. Pimsleur's Dutch. You can probably find it on any torrenting site, its main selling point is that its supposed to help you verbally speak and understand the language, something books don't usually do.

It makes sense that it would have more to do with French. Thanks for the answer.

>>52854504
well that's why I put it under the meme language I'd like to learn. it's not realistic in the least bit since it's a dying language and the only people around here who still speak it are the most devout mennonites and hutterites or are in assisted living and hospice care. I just feel weird how it was such a big part of the identity of my ancestors but it's almost completely died out in the last 2 generations. once my grandma died there were no mennonites or plautdietsch speakers left in my family. it just feels weird
>>52859617
I take it as languages you think would be cool to know but it wouldn't be realistic or beneficial to learn. so languages spoken by a tiny group of people that you aren't a part of or dead languages.
