Tell me about the language in your country.

Does your language have dialects? Mine doesn't, but we have different regional accents.

(btw there IS a difference between the two, make sure you know them m8s)

Yes we have northern and western German which is basically normal German and we have Bavarian/southern German and eastern German. Southern German sounds funny and eastern German sounds absolutely stupid.

I don't know what exactly it could be classified as now, but it's not that. And even still, most of Virginia is rhotic no matter where you go so is it even a southern accent disregarding Northern Virginia?

I think its just based on data that is outdated in some cases. Modern southern is definitely rhotic, but on that map it claims most of south GA drops word final r. i.e. number -> numbah. Only older people do that now, and blacks but their speech develops and changes separately from ours.

We have strong dialects, but very few people speak them any more. I speak a south west central dialect of scots, but only with a few friends and i spoke with my father (who died a few years ago). I have family who speak insular scots, and it is slightly mutually intelligible.

Also, it hefty pisses me off when people say that it is just wrong english - this was the worst in school, when our teacher (who came from england) couldn't understand any scots. It should be her responsibility to learn the local dialect, not all the kids to abandon their culture.

I was fucking sent home from school for speaking my own language - in 2000. This is still ongoing and will continue until the language dies.

I think the "2030" side on pic related is more accurate nowadays.

This is based on my own experience, growing up in Portsmouth, and living in Nottingham (1 year), Ipswich (nearly 1 year), and London (3 years).

There is a midlands accent in Notts, and they use different words too (like "cob" for a bread roll... what's all that about). People in Ipswich have a very similar accent to Hampshire though, I didn't really notice a difference. And then in London, obviously you have a ton of different accents, but among people I know who *grew up* in London, I think they have a distinctive accent, influenced by Afro-Carribean slang.
>>
I've noticed a lot of young suburban southerners have much weaker southern accents than their parents. I know that my parents came from the rural deep south and their accents are strong, but in Atlanta and its wealthy surrounding areas, it's sometimes not that prevalent. I have never said y'all but many people do.

There are so many different german dialects, it's actually insane. The differences are so enormous, that you could sometimes speak of different languages instead of just dialects. This basically means, that people from the north are unable to understand those from the south and vice versa when not speaking standard german (high german). There are even different dialects for each town in the region where I'm living...

The UP was literally a consolation prize for Michigan so they didn't cry and try to start a small civil war, Wisconsin wasn't even a state yet so they just drew a random border and gave it to them.

>>

Not really gonna argue with that. I can speak "proper" English if I consciously choose to, but most of my IRL interactions are either in the typical SoCal urban youth accent/dialect/vernacular (I don't know how to classify it), and I often am having conversations partially in Spanish. I'm probably also an autist and I've read that autists often have weird ways of talking so that may be a contributing factor, although I assume my environment is the main influence.

Don't agree. It's fine that MI got the UP from a territory since it was not a state yet. But after WI achieved statehood, the land they had left is it. In other words, unless you're a state, you can get fucked since we're gonna take yo' land.

>No merger whatsoever (also known, in context, as the three-way contrast): A lack of this merger in North America exists primarily in the Northeastern United States, e.g. in the accents of Philadelphia, New York City, and Rhode Island. 17% of Americans have no merger.

Luxembourgish is more unintelligible then Frisian to most speakers. Other then that, Low Saxon and Limburgish extend very far into Germany and the dialects in the east are more similiar to German then to Dutch . Afrikaans is more similiar to Low Franconian dialects than Limburgish and Low Saxon to be quite fair. According to European law, Frisian, Limburgish and Low Saxon are formally minority languages of the Netherlands.

You must be smoking something good because you're completely wrong. My ass has a general american accent. I should know.

>>52833358
I rep it. Nothing like having what is generic English now.
>>
>>52833536
Well to me Afrikaans sounds like an American trying to speak Dutch, so you're far from the only one.
>>
tangentially related, people in non-anglophone countries, if someone speaks your language fluently but with an english accent, how much can you tell about what english speaking country they're from? Like if someone spoke your language with a very minor accent, could you tell apart an english/american/australian accent etc?

Well, the soviet map is more reliable than the one drawn by a random guy from the internet, but it's definitely outdated by now.
>>
>>52833595
I doubt it's possible. I mean could you tell apart a Norwegian and Swede based on how they spoke English? You probably could if you paid enough attention but it would be pretty difficult
>>
>>52833595
I stayed with a host family in Germany once and I practiced my German with them and they all noticed right away my American accent. They said it was funny sounding
>>
>>52828170
Are you Pinay?
>>
>>52833708
Yeah but I think American English accents and real English accents are a lot more distinct than Norwegian accents and Swedish accents, I don't know maybe it's just me.
>>
>>52829230
>Michigan isn't even connected to it

SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE ISN'T AWARE OF THE MIGHTY MAC!
>>
>>52833708
If you're familiar with both Norwegian and Swedish lanugages why not? Otherwise it would be close to impossible though.
>>
>>52833725
I meant more like someone who has been living in the country and speaking just that language for years, I think if you had a very faint english accent it would be harder to tell than if you were just a student.
>>
>>52830158
I dont. Mary = marry != merry
dawn = don
cot = caught
hock != hawk
>>
>>52833828
Can you vocaroo your pronunciation for "dawn/don" and "cot/caught"? It seems weird to pronounce those the same.
>>
>>52830288
>miery
>mary
>mar-ry

>>52830431
>hahk
>hauk

It's not that hard anons what back woods are you from
>>
>>52833828
I pronounce all of those differently to each other. I really don't get how people pronounce marry like merry at all.
>>
Yes we do, although the differences aren't that big (aside from the South Australian 'Ch-AH-nce' vs the rest of Australia's 'Chance'). It's pretty bizarre given that places like Perth, which is (from memory) the most isolated capital city in the world, have the same accent as those from Tasmania.

how do you pronounce it
>>
>>52833957
Travel and live amongst the states and territories more. There are hundreds of differences. After awhile you can get good enough to pick which state people are from 90% of the time just through accent.
>>
>>52833957
From experience, the biggest offenders in different accents to the base are SA and North Queensland. Melbourne also have a thing where they pronounce "el" as "al"

We have a few accents, but mostly they've died off, to some degree due to the government programs aptly named "language hygiene" in the early 20th century. Quite a bit of accents though, the southern parts in particular got a very distinct accent.
>>
>>52828170
I can hear your disgusting shitskin gook pinoy accent. Your pathetic attempt to make it sound civilized failed completely.

Yes, It's called "Danish"
:^)
>>
>>52834060
There's a reason for that
>force Danes to assimilate in Skåne through programs
>Let shitskins and towelheads move into Skåne and take over the entire county
>"cultural assimilation is racist"
Swedes confirmed for traitors to fellow white countries

Merry = Mary = merry
Dawn =! don
Cot =! caught
Hock =! hawk
>>
>>52833983
This isn't a dialect thing like "aunt" or "caught" the only actual way to pronounce it is "milk". Not only the only correct way, but people don't say anything else unless it's just one of their own personal quirks.
>>
>>52834288

They're all the same. Eat that other dialects.
>>
>>52834319
Do you say dawn as "dawn" or "dahn"? Same question for don.
Also same for hock and hawk.

The differences are existent, sure. However there's too many exceptions to rely upon them. Tasmania is a place where nearly the entire population uses the exact same vowel sounds. From a study I saw somewhere, nearly all the respondents from Hobart used common vowel sounds. Adelaide was similar.

>>52834011
Agreed. People from Melbourne saying "twalve" for the number twelve gives me the shits.
>>
>>52834315
Quite a lot of people say "melk" and it does occur semi-regularly in some dialects. It's part of a vowel shift.
>>
>>52834129
The funny thing is that, in my experience, Danes have an easier time understanding "standard" Swedish(rikssvenska) than they have with scanian.
>>52834148
Scania has been Swedish for longer than Australia have been a country. Everyone forced people to assimilate back then.

The fact of the matter is that no one really knows why scanian speak the way they do. They do peculiar things that isn't shared wither either Swedish or Danish.

It's probably for the better though that they learned how to speak somewhat comprehencibly.
>>
>>52827684
I heard Russia diesn't really have dialects or accents because everyone was forced to go to school learning one specific variant of Russian or something like that once everyone was moved from villages to cities. It was posted here a long time ago

Mary = merry = marry
dawn (almost) = don

The only tumor I see here is Detroit.

You sound confused. Definitely don't sound Mexican. I'm in San Diego. Maybe I'm just used to the Mexicans.
>>
>>52834646
If you pronounce Mary, merry and marry all the same, which one does it sound like?

Do you pronounce them all as merry, all as Mary or all as marry?
>>
>>52834453
W-what? How? It's an "e", surrounded by regular consonants. That baffles me.
Then again, a lot of people in my city pronounce oil the same as Earl, so I guess I can't talk.
>>
>>52830180

What sound do you make in between those consonants? An 'i' sound like "Indian" or an "e" sound like English? I lived in Virginia for 2 years and never bothered to notice how people pronounced things.

Mare [like the horse] - ee

After I posted that I tried pronouncing them with an American accent and Mary sounded correct

Are you serious? Us Wisconsinites sound more Canadian than most Canadians. I can't travel west, south, or east without every qt I talk to going "aww" when they hear me speak. Also I agree with the other Wisconsin anon. Geographically-speaking the UP is Wisconsin Clay.
