Anti-American sentiment is a consequence of the number of loyalists that moved to various areas of Canada, post American revolution. Many of these settlers had their homes and property burned by American revolutionaries and never forgave their former friends and neighbours for turning against their fellow Americans (what many loyalists still considered themselves). The reason Canadian culture is so similar to American culture is because we all originated from the same place, and have always crossed borders both ways. Both countries did start as old world colonies, there is a legacy in that.

It depends on who you are and what you value. In terms of personal liberty, America is probably literally the freest country in the world, memes aside. Lower taxes than the rest of the developed world, most liberal free speech laws, muh guns, etc.
Canada on the other hand is generally safer. There is more of a social safety net if you believe in or value that.

I've lived in both countries. Canada is a comfier, *nicer* place to live. We have some interesting aspects of culture that the United States doesn't have: Francophone society, a more alive indigenous culture, stronger cultural ties to France and the UK. Immigrants "assimilate" more in Canada than they do in the U.S, but they "integrate" equally well in both countries.
The US, however, has a lot more going on. They have more interesting micro and urban culture, better schools, lots of job opportunities, generally speaking more opportunities to get involved in things you're interested in.
Living in Canada is great, but you also feel like you're on the periphery of the centre of the world.
