Yes, the US has 5000 combat aircraft, the next highest is China with 1700 and almost a third of those are literally fighters designed in the 50s. Our SHITTIEST fighter is the F/A-18 Hornet.
We fuck up and lose a lot of money via waste and mismanagement in defense, but we do that in literally every single government department, it's a product of our budget being so large. The waste and loss is a comparatively small amount of the absolutely massive whole.

A lot of it is for research and development or the maintenance/leasing fees for our overseas bases. Aircraft and naval maintenance makes up another large chunk of the budget. I'm not sure if the VA is funded separately but I'd imagine that if it is provided for with the budget that's a decent sum of money.

I don't know about Sweden, but it's not an exaggeration for us at least.
Our defence spending is less than 0.5% of GDP - the vast majority going to pay pensions. Only €150 million goes on equipment, and there's like €90 million for operations.
We have enough ammunition for maybe 2 weeks (the Irish Army also has a maximum number of rounds you're allowed to use when on training exercises), and then we're fucked. We're basically banking on Britain saving us... If it turns out to be the Brits attacking us. Welp, rest in peace Ireland.
People here will tell you the Irish Army is designed to act as a guerrilla force if we're invaded... That's not some magnificent strategy on our part, its fucking budgetary constraints.
Oh, we also don't have any fast aircraft. Our fastest aircraft are prop-driven ones, and our largest naval vessel is less than 2000 tonnes and only good for fishery patrols.
