If you really want to play, I can only recommend floorball over ice hockey. Field hockey is non-existent so play floorball to get the feel of the stick and learn to skate a little in the meantime. Once you can skate for 15 minutes without destroying your legs, you are ready for the rink.

I spent a year in Erasmus in Finland and really loved it. It was in a bigger city though, and we were a lot of students, so it might be a little different. Do you know if the Eramus community is important or not in Lappeenranta?
Also, if you don't have a passport, it might be a good idea to make one before you go there. You can visit St-Petersburg from Finland without a visa for example, and since you'll be quite close it could be a nice opportunity.
