Edition: Babs wants an audience

Oblig English:

The Hundred Years' War was a series of conflicts waged from 1337 to 1453 by the House of Plantagenet, rulers of the Kingdom of England, against the House of Valois, rulers of the Kingdom of France, for control of the latter kingdom. Each side drew many allies into the war. It was one of the most notable conflicts of the Middle Ages, in which five generations of kings from two rival dynasties fought for the throne of the largest kingdom in Western Europe. The war marked both the height of chivalry and its subsequent decline, and the development of strong national identities in both countries.

After the Norman Conquest, the kings of England were vassals of the kings of France for their possessions in France. The French kings had endeavored, over the centuries, to reduce these possessions, to the effect that only Gascony was left to the English. The confiscation or threat of confiscating this duchy had been part of French policy to check the growth of English power, particularly whenever the English were at war with the Kingdom of Scotland, an ally of France.

There's a poliglot who makes videos on Youtube called Luca Lampariello, and in some videos he talks about forming a "language core" when you start to learn a language. Basicaly the idea is that in the beginning you know jackshit and you can't form many types of sentences, but when you learn the basic grammar and basic vocabulary and you can start to innovate and make more complex sentences you acquire a language core, and from then on you just snowball learning more words and grammar. You can even "feel" when you "switch" each core in your brain as you change languages ( Like when you're talking in English with someone e aí derrepente a pessoa começa a falar em Português contigo, parece que seu cérebro muda de marcha).
The first steps are always the hardest when learning a new language, but after developing a core it becomes surprisingly easy, you just have to practice constantly and with almost no effort you end up learning the language

It may not be scientificaly proven or something like that but i find it quite interesting

In 20 plus years of living on that rock, I have heard Irish spoken once outside of school (ironically, it was in D2). It has no significance anymore apart from a romantic view of a reclaimed culture. Furthermore, Irish teachers simply can't teach it. I was two years into university when I learned that Irish had gender rules ffs.

>In 20 plus years of living on that rock, I have heard Irish spoken once outside of school
Most speakers don't flaunt that they can speak it, they'd rather converse in English with strangers since there's no way to really know if the other person can speak Irish. I live in the city, and I've heard it a few times though.

>D2
> It has no significance anymore apart from a romantic view of a reclaimed culture
What's amazing is that it is actually the middle and upper classes learning Irish as a mark of elitism. They're sending their kids to Gaelscoils and speaking it in public.

The same people who scorned the language 20-30 years ago are the ones speaking it now.

>Furthermore, Irish teachers simply can't teach it.
I agree. I'd like a shake-up of the curriculum, with a lot more emphasis placed on actually -speaking- it.

>I was two years into university when I learned that Irish had gender rules ffs.
I had always wondered why some words were an and others were na. Only realized myself a few weeks ago.
>>

>an and others were na

It's essentially a mark so they can use the phrase "Speaking Irish is soooooo cultured" and to allot their retarded children extra points on the LC (that is, for those that can't quality as dyslexic and avoid it altogether). It has no influence on the reality that 99.5% of people cannot speak it.

>It's essentially a mark so they can use the phrase "Speaking Irish is soooooo cultured" and to allot their retarded children extra points on the LC (that is, for those that can't quality as dyslexic and avoid it altogether).

And? Using English and French was considered cultured for decades/centuries, that is why they flourished.

>It has no influence on the reality that 99.5% of people cannot speak it.
If more people are learning it, for whatever reason, that gives more and more reason as to why we should continue to promote it being used.

The last census showed increase in the number of speakers (though only slight), and the next one will likely have the same effect.

No, French and English were widely spoken because they were the two global powers at the time and they literally forced people to speak in their tongues.

0.5%, or whatever number, should not warrant throwing hundreds of millions of Euro at a romantic concept that will have no bearance towards the overall wellbeing of the nation or people.

The census means bollocks. I know many people that will tick yes, can speak in Irish, then blurt out a few badly pronounced phrases. Ask people translate, even sing the national anthem and see how far you get.

You can't dismiss a statistic as "they're lying", just because you feel like it, fuck stick.

30%. 30% of people say they speak Irish in some capacity. I've spent years in the countryside, and practically everyone could have a conversation in Irish but will tell you that they couldn't speak it.

>no bearance towards the overall wellbeing
Tir gan teanga, tir gan anam. The entire point of us separating from Britain was because of our culture, and now you're saying the culture is pointless.

"77,185 said they speak it daily outside the education system" - 0.1%
"110,642 said they spoke it weekly" - 0.2%

I don't do long division weekly, I don't speak Spanish daily, I don't need to solve linear equations daily. I can still fucking do them.

>At least one in three people (~1.8 million) on the island of Ireland can understand Irish to some extent.
>According to the 2011 Census just over 10% of people either speak Irish or have some ability in Irish in Northern Ireland.

You are low-balling the "in some capacity".

The Gaeltachts along have 90,000 people, you think 13000 of them can't speak it because they don't speak it daily?

>Simply put, your family isn't representative of the rest of the population as shown by the simple figures above.
Nor is the argument you posit, that people can't understand Irish because you've encountered a handful of people who probably mispronounced the national anthem. If you are going to use a fallacy, I'll follow suit.

Nonsense. You are over-estimating the "in some capacity". I can speak better Irish than most of those I went to school with, yet I won't claim to speak Irish in any reasonable capacity. Put most of these people on the CEFL test and they'll likely score an A2 or lower.

Which has more to do with your belief in your level of competency than your actual level of competency.

>Put most of these people on the CEFL test and they'll likely score an A2 or lower
Maybe, but we won't know for certain.

>You should listen more carefully to people at any GAA game
You're aware that you're more likely to notice people saying it wrong, than saying it correctly yes? This is completely aside from the fact that there's no real standard of Irish, and even native speakers regularly break the rules.

>You're already well ahead in this field, everything from ad hominem to fallacies of distraction already.
Of course I'm going to attack your character, you're being a pseudo-intellectual cock, trying to measure the value of culture in coins and pennies. >or whatever number
>0.5%, or whatever number
You put a low figure because you believed it was a tiny, tiny minority who can speak the language. 30% believe they can speak it in some capacity, regardless of what you believe their level of proficiency to be.

There is a tremendous difference upon spending "hundreds of millions of euros" on .5% of the population as opposed to 30% of the population. Adding "whatever the number" was you brushing against /minor/ differences in the number of speakers. If 80% believed they were proficient in Irish, would that still be a waste of money?

>these figures are correct
And partial. Not many people do algebra when they leave school, or outside of school, does that mean they can not understand it? Of course there are some with absolutely no capacity, and there are some with a high proficiency. Disregarding the 30% of people who claim to be somewhat proficient because you /think/ most of them can't speak Irish is ridiculous.

>and the 77k/100k came from the census
You discredit the census earlier claiming it was bollocks, and still you disregard the 30% figure.

>Shut up and stop throwing your toys out of the pram when you have been proven a fool.
You are trying to ascertain the value of culture. There is no value.

You tried to say that spending money on the language is pointless, when it isn't. Gaelscoileanna have a higher participation rate in 3rd level institutions than their English counterparts.
You're posited the only reason why Irish is increasing in number is because posh people want to show off - which very well be true, but it in absolutely no way detracts from the fact that Irish has increased in numbers of speakers, and that bilingual students do better than monolingual counterparts.

If everything came down to economics, without taking into consideration other factors, we would be living in a very different world and we would die on this planet as a species rather than go to space.

Good man, done the same

Apparently people don't like the truth, but I do like it; I like it because it upsets a lot of people. If you show them enough times that their arguments are bullshit, then maybe just once, one of them will say, 'Oh! Wait a minute - I was wrong.' I live for that happening. Rare, I assure youIn my life so far, I have discovered that there are really only two kinds of people: those who are for you, and those who are against you. Learn to recognize them, for they are often and easily mistaken for each other.“It seems that our brave new world is becoming less tolerant, spiritual and educated than it ever was when I was young.” As you go through life's rich tapestry, you realize that most people you meet aren't fit to shine your shoes. It's a sad fact, but it's true. A good friend is someone who'd hide you if you were on the run for murder. How many of them do you know?

Motörhead are typically classified as heavy metal, and their fusion of punk rock into the genre helped to pioneer speed metal and thrash metal. Their lyrics typically cover such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, and, most famously, gambling. The name "Motörhead" is a reference to users of the drug amphetamine.[4] The band's distinctive fanged-face logo, with its oversized boar's tusks, chains, and spikes, was created by artist Joe Petagno in 1977 for the cover of the Motörhead album and has appeared in many variations on covers of ensuing albums. The fanged face has been referred to variously as "War-Pig"[5] and "Snaggletooth".[6] The band is ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.[7]

Lead singer Lemmy died 28th December 2015, which is expected to result in the culmination of the band.

Alright, here's an extract of song that is originaly in ancient french from the 13th century but it has a translation :

Tous les mauvais resteront à l'arrière
Qui, n'aimant Dieu, ne l'honorent, ni ne le prient.
Et chacun dit : "Ma femme que fera ?
La laisserai à nul, fut-il ami",
Serait tomber en bien trop folle errance;
Il n'est d'amis hors celui, sans doutance,
Qui pour nous fut en la vraie croix mis.

Also yes most Finns have pretty thick accents, and the monotone is because Finnish is pretty monotone so if you talk English without putting any effort into it (ie. focusing on something else while speaking for example) you use the emphasis you're used to.
