Has anybody learned japanese succesfully here?
I would like to learn japanese. How long did it take you till you could read japanese? I know it will take a long time.
My goal is to learn reading and comprehension. Mostly because I want to read manga and play videogames. I know it sounds kinda cliché but besides the travel aspect this is the way how I want to maintain my skills. I do that with other languages too like french, english, german etc.
I already ordered the genki books and will try my best. My question: can I learn via mangas and videogames or films? That's how I taught myself english and french in the first place.
I know I'll have to do a few months before that just studying but is it realistic that I teach myself via media later on?

Knowing japanese is a gradient, not black/white. Learning it almost as well as english or your native language will take a very long time, probably a decade at least. But depending on how often you can accept coming across something you don't understand, you can learn it somewhat decently faster than that.

You can "read" Japanese after a week if you learn hiragana/katakana; mastering Kanji will probably take half a lifetime though :^)
Genki is a good start, I wouldn't rely on anime or manga to learn Japanese though, only for listening/reading comprehension maybe.
In the end it all depends on your determination, but in my opinion nothing beats a good Japanese language class.

I mean for example you read a manga or play a videogame and then see a kanji you never saw before...considering theres so many that must happen like once a day for people in there early 20s if they are not so experienced.
