It is Vergennes (Foreign affairs ministry) and Beaumarchais who convinced Louis XVI to fund the American revolution using a rhetoric that would appeal to the King of France: weakening England's hold on North-America.
But if you take a closer look the French effort toward the American revolution went much further than simple military help and funding.
The support was actually spearheaded by true idealists among which are Beaumarchais and Lafayette. Lots of people, including most of the French troops were convinced that helping the Americans was siding for Justice.
And if you know a little bit about Beaumarchais (I assume you don't) you would understand how much of a visionary this guy was. And how much he embraced Republicanism, "Free will" and Justice.
He was an amazing author and one of the father of our very own revolution. Very famous in France for his satirical work that got approved by the censorship because they were too coarse to understand the subtlety of his violent criticisms of the monarchic regime.
Read La Fayette's "Memoires", Beaumarchais' "Noces de Figaro" or Tocqueville's "Democracy in America".
Truth is, you cannot talk about the French or American revolutions without contextualizing the other one. That is how deeply linked those historical events are. It is also a fascinating, and rather inspiring topic.
