(Even then we lost much of our national substance in the east.) That's why it contains some features archaic to other Slavic languages, like ę-ą vowels for example. Of course it's not Proto-Slavic. Archaic Polish died out somewhere around 16th century, when Jan Kochanowski proposed and popularized modern version of it. So for instance archaic:

Russian comes from the word Rus. Rus originated in modern northern Russia (Novgorod, Ladoga, Staraya Russa) and then expanded south to Kiev. Ruthenian (Rusin) was how people of Rus' called themselves. After Rus' fell apart during Mongol invasion some parts became part of Lithania and Poland and some became Mongol vassal states. Mongol vassal states part united under Moscow and regained independence and that's how Russia was formed. Other parts of former Rus' never managed to form a sovereign state and stayed under Poland until being reconquering by Russia. So Russia is the one and true heir to ancient Rus'.
