Chile anexed 2 pretty populated areas of Peru and Bolivia and when argentina started their genocide of indians many emigrated to the pretty much empty southern chile. Then they moved to the capital in the early 1900's.

In fact the Mapuches came from Argentina in the mid 1300, Both based tehuelches and other patagonian indians were the real natives, other native groups, started the migration to the southern cone just a few centuries before the spaniards came. It had the balls, but didn't had the population to make it worth, and when it had the population we were at war with the regional power of Peru-bolivia, that had 4 times our popilation and like 6 times our GDP. We destroyed the natives, the problem was that chile just didnt had the population to be funtional, we were not even a real colony, just a bunch of militar bases and a few villages when we were under spanish rule, We tried to be part of argentina in 1799, but Peru and Spain cockblocked us, since they were afraid of the power of a bi-oceanic la plata.
