A lot of it is cultural or an interaction between culture and physiology. There are a lot of interesting studies comparing rates of depression and anxiety between different cultures; the West has a massive rate compared to developing and 'primitive' cultures (e.g. the Amish). I could wax poetic about why this is so all day, but yeah, we're treating the symptoms rather than the cause with medication, 'mindfulness', herbal supplements, yoga, etc. It's sad.

I don't think that's the reason why there's such a disparity; developing cultures tend to have more cohesive family units/support networks, less stress or pressure to perform, less uncertainty regarding your place in life or where you'll end up, less chances for failure, etc. Plus there's usually a lot less nihilism and more meaning given higher levels of religiosity and emphasis on family and community.

No, that's not what I mean. Cognitive-behavioral therapy alone has been demonstrated to treat depression effectively without medication, and even medication can be used safely if the psychiatrist is worth his salt and the patient is proactive in telling him how effective the medication is and if there is any side-effects. Also, depression medication isn't tolerance-building.
Psychiatric medication is extremely over-prescribed, but there's no reason not to seek therapy for mental health issues, and medication is very helpful in cases where the issue has a largely physiological cause.

this is the slippery slope though. The way into depression is subtle and you don't notice it until you're deep in and/or somebody tells you. Depression usually has mostly mental origins at first, but it's very often combined with a physiologically conditioned weakness to such things and it's definitely fed and sustained by physiology. That's why deep depression takes so much willpower to break. Meds, if used correctly, can help you relieve the depressive effects and give you space to gain that willpower. The fact that they're often misused is something else.

AI should get to the point where it's relatively comparable to human cognition within the next 100 years. Creative AI and emotional processing are proving to be huge hurdles, though.

Interestingly enough, family support has a huge influence on whether somebody will develop most mental illnesses; if you look at a map of schizophrenia rates within an American city, the frequency increases as you get closer into the inner-city because most of the families there are poor and broken. With AI as we know it today, yes, but once it grows powerful enough in terms of processing power, to erase "advantage" (we humans will call it advantage, but it's really only difference) of human brain, it's capability to process queries in parallel thoughts rather than one by one by one, as a computer does, it might as well become a matter of setting the right priorities and then learning how to teach it, like we would a child.

Sometimes I wish I lived in a harsher environment, because as you said, it oddly enough holds more certainty than western civilisation, but then again, it would be quite the waste of human talent. And I don't mean me, I mean the entire pool humanity has to choose from. The natural selection conditions in the west just changed from a necessarily physical and secondarily mental superiority, to mental (both in terms of intellect and willpower) superiority being first, while physical prowess gets more irrelevant the higher you get in the mental ladder. Searching for food doesn't require that much mental capacity and willpower and the majority is confused/feels oppressed in the western world, it's simply over their heads. And the result is what you said.

The big issue at the moment isn't so much processing power as it is the type of processing. Creativity and some other parts of human cognition, such as pattern recognition, are very complex and can't be taught through machine learning. Entirely new mechanisms need to be put into place. We're just beginning how to figure out how to get AI to generate new ideas/concepts through genetic algorithms and such.

Yeah, developed society is a blessing and a curse. More a blessing than anything, though people don't seem to be as happy or fulfilled in developed societies. That said, it could be a cultural issue that can be fixed. I think the next generation might react against the emptiness in this one.

Humanity needs a new set of principles, democracy as a social system will get outdated eventually. Common and uncommon folk alike need to think differently, more towards cooperation, with more organic internal control systems. Democracy will become shackling to those who will think cooperatively one day.
but that's beyond the next generation, I'm afraid.

Yeah, there's a lot more that goes into AI than processing power. Creating algorithms that allow the machine to 'think' independently is by far the hardest part, at least in regards to certain important parts of cognition. And there's the whole qualia issue, which might be more philosophical than anything.

That's a good question. I think it depends on whether you'd consider something without qualia 'true AI'.

Agreed. I think that Westerners sense that something is wrong, which is why 'holistic' and new agey shit is so popular right now, but we're a long way off from recognizing what our problems are.
