He was a target of opportunity. They wanted to keep the Arab rebellions going, and they thought that the rebels (the NTC they called themselves) were way more unified than they turned out to be. The country now is worse off and the only way you can justify what happened is by taking a long view. In the long run they likely will be better off. Also, something like a third of the population moved to other countries.

They couldn't. Plus Libya and Iraq are nowhere near as important to Russia as Syria. They don't have bases there, they don't have thousands of their citizens living there (at least pre-war) and they don't have the type of military cooperation. Plus, Russia would never intervene when US ground troops were directly involved like in Iraq.

I hope they get better but I'm skeptical. Morocco has excellent PR, thety always show the polished up picture to the world.
I've been following them more closely, they have a lot of covered up problems, and their government doesn't seem to be very willing to fix them (not that they have the money, they're already a leg and arm into debt). 3rd world monarchies are shit like that.
Their hope now is that tourists will diverge from Tunisia and Egypt and go there instead. They're investing even more heavily into touristic infrastructue (malls, marinas,etc.) not exactly the most primary infrastructure.
One thing I like though is how they're making real attempts at going green, it's not a priority either but it's nice, probably the only ones in MENA to do so.
